Anthropology Paper-2 2024

Paper seems to be relatively tougher than Paper-1. Main differentiation may come from Paper-2 this year. However, it is not like a shocker. Yes, few questions are there where content may not be enough to fill the pages. But, overall itโ€™s not too different from the trend in the last few years. Itโ€™s within the boundaries of what we can expect. The focus on specific thinkers works and specific tribes means we need to study the most crucial work of famous thinkers as they are directly asking questions based on it. In addition, while it may not be possible to know everything about every tribe, the famous things about the most famous tribes can be gathered so that if some specific thing about a tribe is asked we can mention 1-2 unique points, gather our knowledge about that tribe from the entire syllabus we studied and then add some general points to make it a wholesome answer.

High Impact Questions
Origin of State Societies
Rakhigarhi
Buffer Zone of BKRB
ILO 169
Apatani Tribe
PK Bhowmik & Lodha Tribe
South India Paleolithic

Tough Questions
Spyro-Malabar Christians
Apatani Tribe
Buffer Zone of BKRB
PK Bhowmik & Lodha Tribe
Artisanal Tribes of Jharkhand

Questions I would have chosen:
1, 2, 3, 5, 8. I would not attempt 4 as it is too generic. Other questions are reasonable so may consider.
All the Best!

Anthropology Paper-1 2024

Paper seems to be relatively straightforward and generic this year. Thus, quality of answers needs to be high to differentiate oneself and gain more marks. Itโ€™s pretty standard paper and not much to discuss. No bouncers are there and pitch is relatively flat as of now.

High Impact Questions
Mehrgarh
Acheulian and Oldowan
Deconstruction Jacques
Kula Importance
Avoidance and Joking

Tough Ones
Levi Strauss Tsimshian
Ruth Benedict American SW
Acheulian and Oldowan

What I would have chosen?
1, 2, 5, 7, 8
Though any choice of questions is fine in this type of paper.

Best Wishes for Paper-2

CSP-2023 cutoff reaching down to 75.41, reminds me of this post I made some time back. Are both Paper-1 and CSAT cutoffs going to converge in the future?

Observations on Paper 2

Generally paper 2 over the years has been predictable and same is the case this year. Intellectually, it is less challenging than Paper 1 which takes roughly 65% of overall time to prepare.

Full Toss Questions:
Ramapithecus Debate
Neogene Primates
Material Culture & Archaeology
Village as Ideal Republics( More thinkers, more marks 7/10)
Dravidian Languages(More names you drop, more marks you get. Add few thinkers and your easily looking at 7/10)
Schedule Areas( More data, more provisions and more committees is more marks)

Bouncers/Tough Ones
Prehistoric Rock Arts from Uttarakhand
Ethnic Identity vs Ethnicity

Choice of Questions is generally upto you in Paper 2, but if I had written then probably would have avoided Q8. Rest depending on strength you can choose to attempt.

Overall, based on Question Paper wise it has been good year for Anthropology.

Observations on Paper 1

Overall paper is along the expected lines with few bouncers(which nobody can prepare for or answer so no need to worry about them), elements of discussions which are known by keen observers of Anthropology/Insiders of the discipline is more this year.

Section A almost all questions are known and answerable very well, so not much to discuss here. I would have chosen any 2 questions from this section. But Section B is more interesting and tougher than Section A.

Glottochronology is an unknown topic and not something which can be prepared. Best not to attempt it, or at max from Hindi translation write 5-8 lines max based on some idea. Anything more and your bluff will be caught which affects marks in other questions.

What are qualitative computer softwares, your guess is as good as mine? Best to leave this question. Maximum anybody can get here is 10/20, if he doesnโ€™t know names of 4-5 softwareโ€™s. So complete waste, of time. Even though, the other 2 sub questions are good.

Arjun Appadurai is well known case study for Globalization, but this trend of asking Non-Syllabus mentioned thinker is rare. Itโ€™s tough to write for 20 marks, might take up if you have read his work in detail. Otherwise, might not advise. In addition, AL Kroeber subpart is bit tough to address and link. Also chromosome aberrations is not too scoring. So might have avoided this question. But those who attempted need not fret, if you have done justice you wonโ€™t be penalised. Donโ€™t worry.

If I were attempting the paper, probably would have chosen 2, 3 and 6.

Some questions are what I call game changers, like full tosses you need to hit for six to set a very good impression in the paper so that the examiner is impressed with your knowledge. The examiner while checking these few answers should feel that โ€˜Kya bhadiya likha hainโ€™. If you do this well, then even if you donโ€™t answer some of the other generic questions in the paper too well, still the examiner will be kind and award you good marks in those also. This is key to get 160+. They were in my opinion as follows:
2(a) Australopithecines
3(a) Hominization Process
3(b) Clifford Geertz
4(c) Mesolithic

5(b) Rakhigarhi
5(e) William Ogburn
6(a) Malinowski Mead, have to bring Freeman here
8(a) Arjun Appadurai, if you have chosen this question

Mostly, 5(c) Glottochronology and 7(a) Computer Software are not attemptable. But if you somehow know, then definitely examiner will remember your copy among the 1100+ he checked.๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

All the best! Scoring should be good hopefully this year, and for all times to come! God bless Anthropology!
