In an effort to combat drยฅg-related crimes, the National Assembly has amended the NDLEA Act, imposing life imprisonment for drยฅg offenders & traffickers.
Senate has concurred with the recommendation of the House of Representatives to commute the d3ath sentence penalty for persons found guilty of storing, moving or concealing hard drยฅgs & other illicit substances to life imprisonment.
The alignment of the Senate with the House of Representatives yesterday was a sequel to the amendment effected on the NDLEA Act.
The amendment was considered at the plenary, presided over by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, APC Kano North, after majority of senators supported the harmonisation of the conference committee of the two chambers of the National Assembly on Section 11 of the NDLEA Act.
Recall that recently, the House of Representatives passed an amendment to the NDLEA law to prescribe life imprisonment for drยฅg traffickers but the Senate version of the amendment prescribed d3ath penalty for the offenders.

The House of Representatives on November 21, rejected a proposed constitution amendment aimed at instituting a single 6 year term for the president, governors & local government chairmen across the federation
The bill sponsored by Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP, Imo) & 33 co-sponsors also sought to divide the country into 6 geopolitical zones & establish a rotational system for the presidency & governorship within these zones
Additionally, it proposed that all elections be conducted on a single day. Lawmakers declined to allow the billโs sponsor to lead the debate, which sought to amend key sections of the 1999 Constitution, including Sections 76, 116, 132 & 136
It sought to amend the provision of section 132 of the Constitution t by inserting a new subsection (2) deleting the extant subsection (4) & renumbering the entire section accordingly to provide that an election to the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall be rotated between the North & the South regions of the country every 6 years

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has announced that all Nigerian women in need will now have access to free Cesarean sections (CS).
The statement was uploaded on the official X account of the Presidential Media Team on Thursday.
The announcement was made by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, on day 2 of the Joint Annual Review (JAR) conference.
Prof said, โThis initiative is part of the new Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiatives (MAMII) project.โHe highlighted the governmentโs commitment to improving maternal and neonatal health in Nigeria.
He noted, โNigeria continues to face significant health challenges, with maternal mortality at 512 deaths per 100,000 live births and neonatal mortality at 41 deaths per 1,000 live births. The country also has a low uptake of essential health services.

Oludayo Adeagbo, a British-Nigerian, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in a multimillion-dollar business email compromise (BEC) scheme.
According to the US department of justice, Adeagbo, who also goes by John Edwards and John Dayo, conspired with others to steal over $3 million from different entities in Texas, including local government entities, construction companies, and a Houston-area college.
Adeagbo and conspirators also defrauded a North Carolina university of more than $1.9 million. The case began in August 2022 when Adeagbo and two other Nigerian citizens, Donald Echeazu, 42, and Olabanji Egbinola, 44, were extradited from the United Kingdom (UK), where they resided, to face charges of conspiracy, wire fraud, and money laundering.
The US department of justice said offences were committed in North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. On April 8, Adeagbo pleaded guilty in two cases against him in North Carolina and Texas for participating in a business email compromise scheme.

It was gathered that the maintenance will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., during which time power supply may be affected in the surrounding areas.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, disclosed the importance of the maintenance work to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the national grid.
Mbah explained that the exercise is necessary to enable TCN Lines Maintenance Engineers carry out trace maintenance between Towers 6 and 12. Consequently, Benin DisCo will not be able to offtake electricity to customers on the Ondo and Okitipupa 33kV feeders.
Bulk power supply will be restored immediately upon completion of the maintenance,โ Mbah added.

Members of the Nigerian community have reported mass arrests and fines imposed on them in Libya.
This follows the verdict delivered by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in response to a complaint lodged by the Nigeria Football Federation regarding the recent inhumane treatment of the Super Eagles in Libya.
Recall that the Nigerian menโs national team was detained at the Al-Abraq Airport for over 20 hours, after they arrived for the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Mediterannean Knights.
In a ruling on October 26, CAFโs disciplinary committee awarded the Super Eagles three points and three goals for the abandoned game. The panel also ordered the LFF to pay a fine of $50,000 within 60 days of the notification of the decision.
Displeased with the verdict, the LFF President Nasser Al-SuwaiโI described it as โunjust and malicious,โ alleging that the NFFโs influence within CAF played a major role in the outcome.

The defendants, primarily teenagers, are being charged with 10 counts of tยฃrrorism, an attempt to overthrow the government, and alleged mutiny for their participation in the #EndBadGovernance protest that occurred from August 1st to 10th.
One of the defense lawyers, Marshall Abubakar, disclosed that the defendants were charged in two batches of 76 and 49.
However, few minutes after the first batch was called, the defendants were mounting the dock when some of them suddenly collapsed, causing confusion in court, a development that made the judge to suspend proceedings.

Google has been fined in Russia for removing Russian TV channels from YouTube.
The tech giant was fined a staggering 20 decillion dollars which is more than all the money in the world. The company is facing claims from 17 Russian TV channels after banning their accounts on YouTube, which it owns, as a result of international sanctions.
Pro-Kremlin channels involved in the case reportedly include Russia 1 and the platform belonging to Russia Today presenter & Putin mouthpiece Margarita Simonyan.
According to news report, Google began accumulating daily penalties of 100,000 rubles in 2020 after the pro-government media outlets Tsargrad and RIA FAN won lawsuits against the company for blocking their YouTube channels.
Those daily penalties have doubled each week, leading to the current overall fine of around 2 undecillion rubles. Google, whose parent company Alphabet reported a revenue of more than $307 billion in 2023, is unlikely to ever pay the incredibly high fine.

A bill seeking to make Sharia law not just a personal matter in the constitution has been rejected in the House of Representatives.
The bill seeks to amend sections 24, 262 and 277 of the Constitution by removing โpersonalโ in the application of Sharia law. The sponsor of the bill, Aliyu Missau, said commercial entities find it difficult to operate, noting that the constitution did not envisage entities like Jaiz and Taj banks.
However, many lawmakers interpreted the move as an attempt to broaden the scope of Shariah law, which is often limited to marriage, inheritance and other personal issues. Bamidele Salam, a lawmaker from Osun State, said the bill should be rejected because it has the potential to derail the freedom enjoyed by all religions in Nigeria.
โWe must be careful with any changes to the Constitution that could further widen divisions in Nigeria. In any case, the matters my colleague seeks to address are already covered by existing laws,โ he said.

However, he emphasized that this increase would primarily target luxury goods, leaving essential items untouched to protect vulnerable populations.
Mr Edun confirmed that a bill currently before the National Assembly proposes a gradual increase in VAT for luxury items, while essential goods consumed by poorer Nigerians will either remain exempt from VAT or be subject to a zero rate.

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a loan of approximately $618 million from a consortium of financiers for the acquisition of six Italian-made M-346 att@ck jets and ammunition for the Nigerian Air Force.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The Air Force had said that the first three jets are anticipated to arrive by early 2025, with subsequent deliveries expected to continue through mid-2026.
In recent years, the FG has significantly increased defence and security spending to combat various security threats across the nation, allocating about N3.3 trillion to the defence sector for the 2024 fiscal year.
Despite some successes, challenges remain as Boko Haram and other armed groups continue to operate in the Northeast and other regions.
FEC also approved contracts of N44.2 billion for the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to procure vehicles and construct residential accommodations.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has issued a three-month ultimatum to owners of uncompleted buildings and undeveloped plots across the Federal Capital City (FCC) to immediately develop their properties or risk losing them.
This move, FCTA explained, was necessitated by what it described as the rapid expansion of shanties and squatters within uncompleted buildings and undeveloped plots across the FCC.
This was contained in a document dated October 21, 2024 and signed by the Coordinator, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Chief Felix Obuah, and made available to the media on Monday in Abuja.
It read in part: โThe FCT Administration has noted with concern the rapid expansion of shanties and squatters within uncompleted buildings and undeveloped plots across the Federal Capital City.
The Administration has also noted that these buildings and plots are being used as hideouts by men of questionable characters thereby posing a serious security challenge to the residents.
