In my opinion, the most common mistake in the last few hours, which historically unites Kaplan supporters (Israeli anti-Bibi demonstrators - JP) and right-wing individuals, is the assumption that the war has ended and that Israel will not renew its fire.

Don’t take this as an endorsement of the agreement—it is very complex, full of significant flaws, and I have yet to form a solid opinion about it. The agreement does not include an Israeli commitment to ending the war. On the ground, there is no military barrier to resuming it even after the return of Gazans to the northern part of the strip (contrary to the prevailing narrative). The real significant obstacle is the political one.

That said, as long as hostages remain in the Gaza Strip, Israel will have legitimacy to resume fighting. Once no hostages remain, the main factor restraining Israel will be removed from the equation.

And this is Hamas’s dilemma, if one looks ahead a few months and not just a few days.

I have been asked to express my opinion about the deal. I tried to avoid it because I don't know all the details but I will try to answer as best I can.

The big question that should be asked is not whether you are for or against the deal, but what will be the effect of the deal on the future of Gaza (or its lack of future).

For example (completely hypothetical):

If Trump were to say to Netanyahu: "Give me the deal before I take office and in return after I take office I will join you in a program for the voluntary migration of Gazan Arabs to various Arab countries" would you support the deal? Probably yes.

So obviously Netanyahu received all kinds of commitments and guarantees under the table (not necessarily this one) that cannot be published and that can change the picture from end to end later. We just don't know.

On the other hand, the fear of a last snake bite from the Biden administration still exists and Netanyahu is doing everything to prevent it, until the last moment.

Of course, the release of our hostages is also a consideration, but I admit (with fear and trepidation) that if I was convinced that the meaning of the deal was the continuation of Hamas rule in Gaza, I would have strongly opposed it, with all the pain. But the situation is that I am very optimistic about the good things that will happen after the new Trump administration comes in (did you hear Hegseth yesterday?) and therefore I am ready to swallow the primitive celebrations in Gaza and still believe that Netanyahu sees a few moves forward. In light of this, Israel is beginning to realize the need to change its approach regarding negotiations with Hamas. Very soon — unless a significant surprise occurs and a hostage release agreement is reached — the IDF is expected to escalate its military activities in the Gaza Strip by several levels. It is also likely that the IDF will capture Gaza City itself and evacuate its population.
