Topic 33: Describe something that you do to keep yourself concentrated

One thing I do to keep myself concentrated is using the Pomodoro Technique, which is a time management method that breaks my work or study into small, focused intervals. It’s something I discovered a year ago when I was struggling to focus on long study sessions, and it has made a huge difference.

The technique is simple. I set a timer for 25 minutes and focus entirely on one task during that time. After that, I take a 5-minute break before starting another 25-minute session. After completing four sessions, I allow myself a longer break of 15 to 20 minutes. During those focused intervals, I make sure to avoid distractions like my phone or social media, which helps me stay in the zone.

This method works so well for me because it makes large tasks feel more manageable. Instead of thinking about studying for hours, I just focus on completing the next 25 minutes. It also keeps me from getting mentally tired because the short breaks help me recharge and prevent burnout.

Another reason it’s effective is that it trains my brain to focus better over time. I’ve noticed that I can concentrate for longer periods now compared to when I first started. Overall, this habit has not only improved my productivity but also made studying feel less overwhelming.

Topic 16: Describe a person who has chosen a career in the medical field.

I’d like to talk about my cousin, Alisher, who chose to become a doctor. He’s currently working as a general practitioner in Tashkent, and I really admire the dedication he has to his career in medicine.

Alisher decided to pursue medicine right after high school, and it was a challenging path. He had to go through six years of rigorous study at medical school and then complete a few years of practical training. Now, he works at a local clinic, where he sees dozens of patients every day. His job involves diagnosing various health issues, prescribing treatments, and following up with patients to make sure they’re recovering well.

One thing that stands out about Alisher is his genuine care for people. He often goes out of his way to help patients, especially those who can’t afford certain treatments. He’s known for being patient and compassionate, always taking the time to explain diagnoses and treatment options to his patients. Even after a long day at the clinic, he often volunteers his time to speak at health awareness programs in local communities, helping people understand how to take care of their health.

What I find most inspiring about Alisher is his resilience. The medical field is demanding, and he faces a lot of pressure, especially when dealing with serious cases. Yet he handles it all with a calm attitude and a sense of purpose, which I find really motivating. His career has impacted our family, too, as he’s always there to offer advice whenever anyone has a health concern.

Overall, Alisher’s dedication to his profession and his commitment to helping others make him an exceptional person, and I feel lucky to have him as a role model in my life.

Topic 28: Describe a plant (a flower, vegetable, or fruit) in your country.

I’d like to talk about the tomato, which is one of the most common and widely grown vegetables in Uzbekistan. Tomatoes are a key ingredient in many traditional Uzbek dishes, and they are grown all over the country, especially in the summer when the climate is ideal for them.

Tomatoes come in different varieties, but the most common ones here are round, red tomatoes that are juicy and full of flavor. They are often used fresh in salads, like our popular achichuk salad, which is a simple combination of thinly sliced tomatoes, onions, and herbs. Tomatoes are also used in many cooked dishes, such as shurpa (a traditional soup) or in sauces for plov.

One of the reasons tomatoes are so popular is that they grow well in Uzbekistan's warm and sunny climate. Many people grow them in their gardens or even on their balconies. They’re easy to cultivate, and the harvest is usually abundant.

What I love about tomatoes is their versatility. They can be eaten fresh, cooked, or even made into sauces, and they add a lot of flavor and color to any dish. Plus, they are healthy and full of vitamins, so they are an essential part of our daily diet.

Topic 29: Describe a risk you took that you thought would lead to a terrible result but ended up with a positive result.

I’d like to talk about a risk I took last year that I thought could go terribly wrong but ended up with a surprisingly positive outcome. It was when I decided to leave my stable job to start my own small business. At the time, I had been working for a company for about five years, and while the job was secure, I felt stuck and unfulfilled. Starting a business had always been my dream, but it was a huge risk, especially in an unpredictable economy.

I spent months thinking about it, weighing the pros and cons, but deep down, I was scared it could end badly. I didn’t have a lot of savings, and there was no guarantee my business idea would succeed. However, after discussing it with my family and doing some research, I decided to take the plunge. I quit my job and started a small online business selling handmade accessories.

At first, things were slow, and I started to worry that I had made the wrong decision. I even thought about going back to my old job. But, to my surprise, after a couple of months, the business started picking up. Word of mouth spread, and I started receiving more orders than I had anticipated. It got to the point where I was making more money than I had ever earned in my previous job, and, more importantly, I was doing something I truly enjoyed.

Looking back, I’m glad I took that risk, even though it seemed terrifying at the time. It taught me that sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone to achieve something great. The experience also gave me more confidence in my abilities and showed me that with hard work and persistence, things can turn out better than expected.

Topic 45: Describe a new law you would like to introduce in your country.

If I had the power to introduce a new law in Uzbekistan, it would be a law promoting environmental protection, specifically focused on reducing plastic waste. Over the past few years, I’ve noticed that plastic pollution is becoming a serious issue in many cities, especially in public spaces, rivers, and even on the streets. While there are some initiatives to reduce waste, I believe a strict law would help address this problem more effectively.

This new law would ban single-use plastic bags and encourage the use of biodegradable alternatives, such as cloth or paper bags. Shops and supermarkets would be required to provide eco-friendly bags or encourage customers to bring their own reusable ones. In addition, there would be strict penalties for businesses and individuals who continue to use or distribute plastic bags after the law takes effect.

To make this law successful, there should also be an awareness campaign alongside it. People need to understand the environmental impact of plastic waste and why switching to alternatives is crucial. Schools and universities could educate young people about recycling, and businesses could be given incentives, like tax breaks, for adopting sustainable practices.

I believe this law would benefit our country in the long run. Not only would it reduce the amount of plastic litter in public spaces, but it would also contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations. It would also help us align with global efforts to combat pollution and climate change. Overall, I think introducing this law would make a positive and lasting difference in Uzbekistan.

Topic 27: Describe a party that you enjoyed.

I’d like to talk about a birthday party I attended last year in Tashkent. It was for my close friend, Akmal, who was turning 25, and a few of us decided to throw him a surprise party.

We held the party at a nice restaurant in the city, which had a private area where we could all gather. It was a modern place with a great ambiance, and the setting felt perfect for a fun celebration. We had planned everything down to the last detail, from the decorations to the music, and everyone was really excited.

The best part of the evening was when Akmal walked in. He had no idea we were planning this, and the look on his face was priceless when everyone shouted "Surprise!" It really set the tone for the night, and we all spent the rest of the evening eating, laughing, and just enjoying each other’s company. We played some upbeat music, and a few of us even danced, which made the atmosphere lively and energetic.

The food was another highlight. We had a mix of different dishes, both local and international, so there was something for everyone to enjoy. Of course, we couldn’t forget the cake – it was custom-made for Akmal, and everyone gathered around as we sang "Happy Birthday" and he made a wish.

What I really enjoyed about this party was how relaxed and enjoyable it was. We were all close friends, so there was a comfortable vibe, and it gave us the chance to catch up and make new memories together. Overall, it was one of those nights where everything just came together perfectly, and it’s definitely a celebration I’ll remember for a long time.

Topic 11: Describe an occasion when you lost something important.

I’d like to talk about a time when I lost my wallet, which was quite an upsetting experience because it had all my important items, like my ID, bank cards, and some cash. This happened about a year ago when I was traveling by train to visit a friend in another city.

I remember the day vividly. It was a busy weekday, and I was in a rush to catch my train. I placed my wallet in the outer pocket of my bag, thinking it would be easy to grab if I needed it. After I boarded the train, I sat down and got comfortable, but it wasn’t until the ticket inspector came around that I realized my wallet was missing. My heart sank as I checked my bag thoroughly, but it was nowhere to be found. I must have dropped it either in the station or while getting on the train.

The first thing I did was notify the train staff. They were very helpful and advised me to call the lost and found department at the station, which I did immediately. Unfortunately, they hadn’t found anything at that point. I felt anxious, mainly because my ID and bank cards were in that wallet, and I was worried about the possibility of identity theft or unauthorized use of my cards.

Luckily, I acted quickly and called my bank to block my cards, which gave me some peace of mind. A few hours later, to my surprise, I received a call from the station’s lost and found office. Someone had turned in my wallet! When I went to collect it, everything was intact, including the cash.

The whole experience taught me a valuable lesson about being more careful with my belongings, especially while traveling. Although it was stressful at the time, I was relieved to get everything back thanks to the honesty of a stranger and the efficient lost and found service.

Topic 13: Describe a person who likes to make things by hand.

I’d like to talk about my aunt, Sarah, who has a real passion for creating things by hand. Ever since I can remember, she’s always been involved in some sort of craftwork, whether it’s knitting, pottery, or woodworking. What stands out most about her is how incredibly skilled she is, despite being self-taught.

One of her favorite hobbies is knitting, and she creates the most intricate scarves, sweaters, and even blankets. I remember once watching her as she worked on a complex design. Her hands moved so swiftly and confidently, and within hours, a beautifully patterned scarf took shape. What’s remarkable is that she never follows a set pattern; she always adds her own twist to it, making each piece unique.

Besides knitting, she’s also into woodworking. She has a small workshop in her garage where she creates hand-carved wooden sculptures and furniture. Last year, she made a coffee table entirely by hand for our family, and it was stunning – the craftsmanship was flawless, and it had this personal touch that made it even more special.

What I admire most about her is not just her talent but her patience. Making things by hand can be time-consuming and requires a lot of attention to detail, but she seems to enjoy every step of the process. She finds it relaxing and often says that it’s her way of disconnecting from the fast-paced world.

Overall, she’s a true artist in every sense, and her creativity and passion for making things by hand are really inspiring. Whether it’s a knitted sweater or a hand-carved sculpture, each item she creates is a reflection of her personality – thoughtful, detailed, and one-of-a-kind.

Topic 18: Describe an occasion when you received good service from a company or shop.

Well, I’d like to talk about a time when I received excellent customer service from a local electronics store. A few months ago, I was looking for a new laptop because my old one had started to slow down, and I needed something more powerful for work.

I visited the store, and right away, a sales representative approached me. What really impressed me was his knowledge about all the products. I wasn’t sure what I wanted at first, but he took the time to ask me about my needs – whether I needed the laptop for heavy tasks like video editing or just for basic tasks like browsing and writing. He then explained the specifications of different models in a way that was easy to understand, which I really appreciated because I’m not very tech-savvy.

After I picked a model, the service continued to be top-notch. They offered me a free upgrade to the operating system and even installed some essential software for me at no extra cost. On top of that, they gave me a discount on accessories like a laptop bag and a mouse. I felt they really went above and beyond to make sure I was happy with my purchase.

In the end, the whole experience was so smooth and hassle-free that I felt valued as a customer. It wasn’t just about selling me something – they wanted to ensure I had the best possible experience. This kind of service is rare, and it’s definitely something I remember fondly.
