🔹 The crypto market in 2024 was shaped by increasing interest from traditional financial institutions, government decisions, and large-scale sell-offs. From the year's outset, investors began feeling the impacts of spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF approvals.

🔹 A major milestone for the market was the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) approval of Bitcoin and Ethereum-based ETFs. Applications from key players like ARK Invest, BlackRock, and Fidelity were accepted, strengthening Bitcoin's connection with traditional finance. This development boosted institutional interest, spurred liquidity, and fueled price movements. Ethereum's ETF approval similarly increased trust in cryptocurrencies, driving positive trends. The altcoin market also saw activity, with ETF applications for assets like Solana, XRP, and Hedera Hashgraph (HBAR) generating heightened interest.

🔹 In Europe, Germany’s Bitcoin sell-off made headlines. In July, the German government began transferring a significant portion of its 50,000 Bitcoin reserves to exchanges, causing volatility and price declines. By July 16, the reserves were depleted, triggering further drops across global markets, not just in Europe.

🔹 Developments tied to Mt. Gox and FTX had lasting effects throughout the year. In June, Mt. Gox started distributing assets lost in 2014, but announced in October that distributions would be delayed to 2025, postponing potential selling pressure. Meanwhile, the FTX bankruptcy saga continued to unfold. In March, founder Sam Bankman-Fried’s prison sentence was seen as a key justice milestone, while October brought an approved restructuring plan, with creditor payments set to begin in early 2025. These events heightened market uncertainty mid-year.

🔹 MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin investments were a focal point throughout 2024. The company acquired 446,400 BTC at an average price of $97,837, showcasing bold investments even at high prices. With around 2.13% of the circulating Bitcoin supply, MicroStrategy solidified its influence in the crypto market and underscored institutional interest.

🔹 Early in the year, stable interest rate policies generally weighed on crypto prices, with Bitcoin fluctuating between $50,000 and $70,000. However, a pivotal 50-basis-point rate cut by the Federal Reserve on September 18 changed market sentiment positively. Bitcoin surged, nearing historic highs in Q4. On November 7, a 25-basis-point rate cut pushed Bitcoin toward $100,000. By December 18, Bitcoin surpassed $100,000, hitting an all-time high. FED Chairman Jerome Powell's description of Bitcoin as "digital gold" was well-received, while President-elect Donald Trump’s supportive stance and plans for Bitcoin reserves sparked optimism. Powell’s caution about these plans tempered short-term enthusiasm, but overall, 2024 became a defining year in crypto history.
