A Comparison of Initial Professional Development (IPD) and Professional Development Assessment (PDA) for Chartered Membership Progression

Are you a Certified Member looking to progress to Chartered membership with IOSH? Understanding the differences between Initial Professional Development (IPD) and Professional Development Assessment (PDA) can help you navigate the new progression route launching in summer 2024.

IPD, the current progression route, involves an assessment structure with three different routes including Electronic Skills Development Portfolio, CPD review, and Peer Review Interview. On the other hand, PDA introduces a streamlined process with Electronic Open Assessment exam, CPD review, and Peer Review Interview as key components.

While IPD has a registration fee of £240.00, PDA registration costs £550.00 with concessionary fees available in certain circumstances. The assessment process for both IPD and PDA is moderated by IOSH, ensuring quality and consistency in the evaluation.

With a timeframe of 2 years for IPD and 18 months for PDA, the standards for both assessments are aligned with IOSH's competency framework, focusing on technical, core, and behavioural competencies and capabilities.

Upon successfully passing and completing the assessment, candidates are awarded Chartered membership. To protect their membership category, members must complete 30 hours of CPD and the Ethical Practice in OSH e-learning and assessment annually, in line with the renewal process.

The transition from IPD to PDA offers a more structured and comprehensive approach to achieving Chartered membership with IOSH. By understanding the differences between the two assessments, Certified Members can better prepare for their professional development journey.

Update: PDA will replace Initial Professional Development (IPD) from 14 August 2024. Until then, IPD remains open for Certified Members looking to progress to Chartered status. Anyone who registers for IPD can continue this route unchanged.

Shedding light on legal nuances!

In the realm of workplace safety in India, it's vital to understand the specific responsibilities and obligations of Safety Officers. Contrary to common misconceptions, Safety Officers are not personally accountable for accidents that occur in the workplace. As per the Factories Act, 1948, and the Mines Act, 1952, the ultimate responsibility for accident prevention and ensuring a safe working environment lies with the management of the organization.

In light of recent events at SMC Power Plant Jharsuguda, it's essential to address the complexities surrounding the role of Safety Officers.
