Charles Spurgeon's Morning and Evening
MORNING January 13, 2025

"Jehoshaphat made ships of Tharshish to go to Ophir for gold: but they went not; for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber"
1 Kings 22:48

Solomon's ships had returned in safety, but Jehoshaphat's vessels never reached the land of gold. Providence prospers one, and frustrates the desires of another, in the same business and at the same spot, yet the Great Ruler is as good and wise at one time as another. May we have grace today, in the remembrance of this text, to bless the Lord for ships broken at Ezion-geber, as well as for vessels freighted with temporal blessings; let us not envy the more successful, nor murmur at our losses as though we were singularly and specially tried. Like Jehoshaphat, we may be precious in the Lord's sight, although our schemes end in disappointment.
The secret cause of Jehoshaphat's loss is well worthy of notice, for it is the root of very much of the suffering of the Lord's people; it was his alliance with a sinful family, his fellowship with sinners. In 2 Ch. 20:37, we are told that the Lord sent a prophet to declare, "Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the Lord hath broken thy works." This was a fatherly chastisement, which appears to have been blest to him; for in the verse which succeeds our morning's text we find him refusing to allow his servants to sail in the same vessels with those of the wicked king. Would to God that Jehoshaphat's experience might be a warning to the rest of the Lord's people, to avoid being unequally yoked together with unbelievers! A life of misery is usually the lot of those who are united in marriage, or in any other way of their own choosing, with the men of the world. O for such love to Jesus that, like him, we may be holy, harmless, undefiled, and separate from sinners; for if it be not so with us, we may expect to hear it often said, "The Lord hath broken thy works."

Video footage at a local dairy farm caught the three teenagers stealing the family's young goats that they shared with the community in their petting zoo. The owner had an opportunity to turn them into the police, but instead this was her response:

"Raising animals is always a challenge and always requires a lot of hard work. Then even with all your best efforts and preparation, they can get sick or hurt. Yesterday, I never expected to wake up and find my animals had been stolen in the night. My family, community, and I were plunged into a whirlwind of emotions. In the end, we are so grateful for God’s hand in bringing together so many people for good.

A part of me, and I’m guessing many of you too, want to see punishment for the three boys who made such a terrible choice and caused so much pain to so many. I believe strongly, as a Christian and a mother and a teacher, that a person will truly change only if there’s a positive relationship in place. People won’t change their behavior without trust and accountability.

These boys will each spend time with me this summer doing hard work around the farm. They will see my face. They will see my children’s faces. They will learn more about who we are and what we do.

My hope is to make a real change in someone’s life when they’re in a position to be changed. My hope is they will walk away with a better respect for others, and some blisters on their hands."

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy!

Commentary
MARTYN LLOYD-JONES
Man cannot even keep the Ten Commandments. And yet he talks glibly about keeping the Sermon on the Mount, and of imitating Christ. . . . And if a man cannot keep the Ten Commandments, as they understand them, what hope have they of keeping the Ten Commandments as they have been interpreted by the Lord Jesus Christ? That was the whole trouble with the Pharisees, who so hated him and who finally crucified him. They thought they were keeping the Ten Commandments and the moral law. Our Lord convinced them and convicted them of the fact that they were not doing so. They claimed that they had never committed murder. Wait a minute, said our Lord. Have you ever said to your brother, “Thou fool”? If you have, you are guilty of murder. Murder does not only mean actually, physically, killing a man, it means that bitterness and hatred in your heart. . . . And he taught the same, you remember, with regard to adultery. They claimed that they were guiltless. But wait a minute, says our Lord, you say you have never committed adultery? “But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her, hath committed adultery with her already in his heart” (Matt. 5:28). He is guilty; he has coveted, he has desired. You see, as our Lord comes to interpret the law, he shows that an evil desire is as damnable as a deed. A thought and an imagination are as reprehensible in the sight of God as the act committed.

Devotional
STEPHEN UM
Christians are obligated to obey the Ten Commandments, because what we find in the Ten Commandments are the laws of God. What we find in Jesus’s interpretation in the Sermon on the Mount is that the standards of the law are much higher than we had assumed. It’s not just not committing adultery and not murdering and not stealing. Jesus says, in interpreting the sixth commandment, that if you harbor bitterness, if you’re unable to forgive someone, if you call a person raca (that is, to consider him a nonperson), then you’ve murdered that person in your heart. He also says that if you lust in your heart, you’re breaking the seventh commandment and committing adultery. And you are being greedy if you’re materialistic and you’re not radically generous. So Jesus raises the bar of the commandments to the highest level.

Martin Luther wrote that you cannot break the rest of the commandments without first breaking the first one. That is, if you break the commandments, you are looking at other things as your ultimate value and your god rather than God himself.

Luther also said that when there is a negative prohibition in the Ten Commandments, a positive implication is assumed. Therefore, when it says that you ought not to murder, it also means that you ought to radically love others, even neighbors and enemies. And when it says you ought not to commit adultery, the assumption is that you’re supposed to be faithful to your wife or to your husband and to recognize sexuality as a beautiful gift from God. And therefore if you’re in a marriage relationship, you ought to recognize that it is a covenantal commitment between a man and a woman. When it says that you ought not to steal, the understanding is that you ought to be radically generous.

These are the responsibilities that Christians have in responding to the Ten Commandments. But the problem is that we’re unable to obey them perfectly. So how are we going to resolve that tension?

Jesus Christ is the second Adam, the true Israel, the individual divine corporate head and representative who has come to fulfill the obligations of the law perfectly in himself. His obedience and righteousness now gets imputed into our lives, thereby giving us the ability to obey the obligations and the demands of the law. Even when we don’t obey them perfectly, we know that we are not going to be crushed by the law, and we will have confidence as we seek to obey the law of God because we know that Jesus Christ has fulfilled those requirements perfectly for us.

Sixth, that we do not hurt, or hate, or be hostile to our neighbor, but be patient and peaceful, pursuing even our enemies with love. Seventh, that we abstain from sexual immorality and live purely and faithfully, whether in marriage or in single life, avoiding all impure actions, looks, words, thoughts, or desires, and whatever might lead to them. Eighth, that we do not take without permission that which belongs to someone else, nor withhold any good from someone we might benefit.

Scripture
ROMANS 13:9
For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

EVENING

"And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn."
Genesis 29:26

We do not excuse Laban for his dishonesty, but we scruple not to learn from the custom which he quoted as his excuse. There are some things which must be taken in order, and if we would win the second we must secure the first. The second may be the more lovely in our eyes, but the rule of the heavenly country must stand, and the elder must be married first. For instance, many men desire the beautiful and well-favoured Rachel of joy and peace in believing, but they must first be wedded to the tender-eyed Leah of repentance. Every one falls in love with happiness, and many would cheerfully serve twice seven years to enjoy it, but according to the rule of the Lord's kingdom, the Leah of real holiness must be beloved of our soul before the Rachel of true happiness can be attained. Heaven stands not first but second, and only by persevering to the end can we win a portion in it. The cross must be carried before the crown can be worn. We must follow our Lord in his humiliation, or we shall never rest with him in glory.
My soul, what sayest thou, art thou so vain as to hope to break through the heavenly rule? Dost thou hope for reward without labour, or honour without toil? Dismiss the idle expectation, and be content to take the ill-favoured things for the sake of the sweet love of Jesus, which will recompense thee for all. In such a spirit, labouring and suffering, thou wilt find bitters grow sweet, and hard things easy. Like Jacob, thy years of service will seem unto thee but a few days for the love thou hast to Jesus; and when the dear hour of the wedding feast shall come, all thy toils shall be as though they had never been--an hour with Jesus will make up for ages of pain and labour.
Jesus, to win thyself so fair,
Thy cross I will with gladness bear:
Since so the rules of heaven ordain,
The first I'll wed the next to gain.

Treasure in Jars of Clay

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.

For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

So death is at work in us, but life in you.

Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, "I believed, and so I spoke," we also believe, and so we also speak, knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into His presence.

For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.

For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, He called His disciples to Him and said to them, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat.

And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away."

And His disciples answered Him, "How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?"

And He asked them, "How many loaves do you have?" They said, "Seven."

And He directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, He broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd.

And they had a few small fish. And having blessed them, He said that these also should be set before them.

And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full.

And there were about four thousand people. And He sent them away.

And immediately He got into the boat with His disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.

What is a Renewed Mind?

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2
In this scripture, the apostle Paul is telling us that we are to be transformed by changing the way we think, but he is also showing us what a renewed mind is.
A renewed mind is a mind that is able to prove the will of God by understanding the will of God. It is a mind that thinks God thoughts, to prove God’s ways.
The Bible makes it clear in the New Covenant that since we have the Spirit of God in us we can know God’s thoughts.
“For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may KNOW THE THINGS FREELY GIVEN TO US BY GOD, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. 1 Corinthians 2:10-15.
The apostle Paul even goes as far to say that we have the mind of Christ.
“For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:16
So what does it mean to prove God’s will?
Well, the definition of prove is to “demonstrate the truth or existence of something by evidence or argument.”
Proving the will of God is to demonstrate the will of God. The renewed mind is not simply the ability to quote a scripture for a given situation. It is a mind that is being filled with the things of God, that it becomes natural to demonstrate God’s will to the world.
This is the reason the apostle Paul writes in Galatians 5:22 that the fruit of walking in the Spirit is “love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control.” These “fruits” are the demonstration of the will of God.
Now, notice how Paul prays for the Colossian church In Colossians 1:9-11.
“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.”
These verses reveal the results of a Christian that has a renewed mind, or a mind that is “filled with the knowledge of His Will.” The results are or will become that (1) you will walk worthy of the Lord, (2) you will fully please, (3) you’ll be fruitful in every good work, (4) you’ll increase in the knowledge of God. All this for knowing His will.

EVENING

"His place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure."
Isaiah 33:16

Do you doubt, O Christian, do you doubt as to whether God will fulfil his promise? Shall the munitions of rock be carried by storm? Shall the storehouses of heaven fail? Do you think that your heavenly Father, though he knoweth that you have need of food and raiment, will yet forget you? When not a sparrow falls to the ground without your Father, and the very hairs of your head are all numbered, will you mistrust and doubt him? Perhaps your affliction will continue upon you till you dare to trust your God, and then it shall end. Full many there be who have been tried and sore vexed till at last they have been driven in sheer desperation to exercise faith in God, and the moment of their faith has been the instant of their deliverance; they have seen whether God would keep his promise or not. Oh, I pray you, doubt him no longer! Please not Satan, and vex not yourself by indulging any more those hard thoughts of God. Think it not a light matter to doubt Jehovah. Remember, it is a sin; and not a little sin either, but in the highest degree criminal. The angels never doubted him, nor the devils either: we alone, out of all the beings that God has fashioned, dishonour him by unbelief, and tarnish his honour by mistrust. Shame upon us for this! Our God does not deserve to be so basely suspected; in our past life we have proved him to be true and faithful to his word, and with so many instances of his love and of his kindness as we have received, and are daily receiving, at his hands, it is base and inexcusable that we suffer a doubt to sojourn within our heart. May we henceforth wage constant war against doubts of our God--enemies to our peace and to his honour; and with an unstaggering faith believe that what he has promised he will also perform. "Lord, I believe, help thou mine unbelief."

For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.

For we are not writing to you anything other than what you read and acknowledge and I hope you will fully acknowledge--just as you did partially acknowledge us--that on the day of our Lord Jesus you will boast of us as we will boast of you.

Because I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a second experience of grace.

I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and to come back to you from Macedonia and have you send me on my way to Judea.

Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans according to the flesh, ready to say "Yes, yes" and "No, no" at the same time?

As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been Yes and No.

For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not Yes and No, but in Him it is always Yes.

For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him. That is why it is through Him that we utter our Amen to God for His glory.

And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us His Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

But I call God to witness against me--it was to spare you that I refrained from coming again to Corinth.

Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith.

Stray Dog Saves Sleeping Family From Kitchen Fire Weeks After Adoption
“We shouldn't underestimate the rescue dog and the incredible things they will do.”
By Lily Feinn
Published on Nov 6, 2024 at 12:36 PM

When Gabby Bannon first met Rusty, she never anticipated that the timid stray would save her and her children’s lives.
It was by chance that Bannon even crossed paths with the homeless dog, since they lived over 500 miles from each other.
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, Bannon traveled to North Carolina with LaMancha Animal Rescue to deliver supplies to a distribution center. The volunteers stopped at Caldwell County Humane Society to pick up dogs surrendered or displaced by the storm.
“Rusty was wandering a nearby apartment complex with another dog when he was brought into the shelter after the storm,” Bannon told The Dodo. “The dog he was with was reunited with its owner, but they didn't recognize [Rusty].”
Bannon knew there was something special about Rusty, and they seemed to bond immediately.
“I was assisting in loading dogs in their crates to travel back to Pennsylvania, and when I put a leash on Rusty and pulled him from his kennel, I felt this instant connection,” Bannon said. “I can't really explain why, but he seemed to have a gentle soul.”
Seeing the look of fear on Rusty’s face as he neared his travel crate, Bannon decided to let him ride in the cab of her truck. “When I arrived home 11 hours later, I knew he would be with us,” Bannon said.
Soon, Rusty was officially part of her family. Her 2-year-old son showed a special interest in Rusty right away, wanting the dog with him at all times. “He is so well-mannered and one of the kindest dogs I've ever encountered,” Bannon said. “He blended right into the family and adores the kids.”
Rusty seemed happy to finally be loved and wanted by a family — and he wasn’t going to let anything ruin that. So when his keen nose picked up the scent of smoke a few weeks after his adoption, he knew he needed to alert his new mom.
Bannon was napping with her baby and toddler in the early morning when Rusty began to get agitated. “He was sleeping on the floor and started barking and pacing,” Bannon said. “At first, I didn't know why, so I tried to settle him. He persisted and started nipping at the sleeve of my shirt.”
Bannon recognized the smell of electrical burning, but living in an industrial area with her windows open, it didn't strike her as alarming.
"When Rusty wouldn't settle, I decided to go downstairs, except when I opened my door, the house was filled with smoke," Bannon said.
Two of her smoke detectors had failed, and thick, black smoke was choking the upstairs hallway. Bannon grabbed her two children and Rusty and evacuated the house.
Bannon rushed back inside to look for her cat and found the source of the smoke: a small fire in the kitchen seemingly caused by a faulty outlet. She was able to put it out with a fire extinguisher, with minimal damage.
Without Rusty's heroic actions, things could have turned out very differently, and the pup's family made sure he knew he was a very good boy.
"It strengthened our connection for sure," Bannon said. "That night, he had a steak dinner for himself, and we went to a local dog bakery for freshly baked treats for him!"
And for Bannon and her family, there was an important lesson learned that day: "We shouldn't underestimate the rescue dog and the incredible things they will do."

Psalms 37

1 Fret not yourself because of evildoers; be not envious of wrongdoers!

2 For they will soon fade like the grass and wither like the green herb.

3 Trust in the LORD, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.

4 Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will act.

6 He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.

7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!

8 Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.

9 For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land.

10 In just a little while, the wicked will be no more; though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there.

11 But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace.

12 The wicked plots against the righteous and gnashes his teeth at him,
13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for He sees that his day is coming.

14 The wicked draw the sword and bend their bows to bring down the poor and needy, to slay those whose way is upright;
15 their sword shall enter their own heart, and their bows shall be broken.

16 Better is the little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked.

17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous.

18 The LORD knows the days of the blameless, and their heritage will remain forever;
19 they are not put to shame in evil times; in the days of famine they have abundance.

20 But the wicked will perish; the enemies of the LORD are like the glory of the pastures; they vanish--like smoke they vanish away.

21 The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives;
22 for those blessed by the LORD shall inherit the land, but those cursed by Him shall be cut off.

23 The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in His way;
24 though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.

26 He is ever lending generously, and his children become a blessing.

27 Turn away from evil and do good; so shall you dwell forever.

28 For the LORD loves justice; He will not forsake His saints. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.

29 The righteous shall inherit the land and dwell upon it forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice.

31 The law of his God is in his heart; his steps do not slip.

32 The wicked watches for the righteous and seeks to put him to death.

33 The LORD will not abandon him to his power or let him be condemned when he is brought to trial.

34 Wait for the LORD and keep His way, and He will exalt you to inherit the land; you will look on when the wicked are cut off.

35 I have seen a wicked, ruthless man, spreading himself like a green laurel tree.

36 But he passed away, and behold, he was no more; though I sought him, he could not be found.

37 Mark the blameless and behold the upright, for there is a future for the man of peace.

38 But transgressors shall be altogether destroyed; the future of the wicked shall be cut off.

39 The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; He is their stronghold in the time of trouble.

40 The LORD helps them and delivers them; He delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in Him.

"Love is the bridge between you
and everything."
~Rumi

"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.

Charles Spurgeon's Morning and Evening
MORNING November 8, 2024

"As ye have received Christ Jesus the Lord."
Colossians 2:6

The life of faith is represented as receiving--an act which implies the very opposite of anything like merit. It is simply the acceptance of a gift. As the earth drinks in the rain, as the sea receives the streams, as night accepts light from the stars, so we, giving nothing, partake freely of the grace of God. The saints are not, by nature, wells, or streams, they are but cisterns into which the living water flows; they are empty vessels into which God pours his salvation. The idea of receiving implies a sense of realization, making the matter a reality. One cannot very well receive a shadow; we receive that which is substantial: so is it in the life of faith, Christ becomes real to us. While we are without faith, Jesus is a mere name to us--a person who lived a long while ago, so long ago that his life is only a history to us now! By an act of faith Jesus becomes a real person in the consciousness of our heart. But receiving also means grasping or getting possession of. The thing which I receive becomes my own: I appropriate to myself that which is given. When I receive Jesus, he becomes my Saviour, so mine that neither life nor death shall be able to rob me of him. All this is to receive Christ--to take him as God's free gift; to realize him in my heart, and to appropriate him as mine.

Salvation may be described as the blind receiving sight, the deaf receiving hearing, the dead receiving life; but we have not only received these blessings, we have received Christ Jesus himself. It is true that he gave us life from the dead. He gave us pardon of sin; he gave us imputed righteousness. These are all precious things, but we are not content with them; we have received Christ himself. The Son of God has been poured into us, and we have received him, and appropriated him. What a heartful Jesus must be, for heaven itself cannot contain him!

Charles Spurgeon's Morning and Evening
MORNING November 1, 2024

"The church in thy house."
Philemon 2

Is there a Church in this house? Are parents, children, friends, servants, all members of it? or are some still unconverted? Let us pause here and let the question go round--Am I a member of the Church in this house? How would father's heart leap for joy, and mother's eyes fill with holy tears if from the eldest to the youngest all were saved! Let us pray for this great mercy until the Lord shall grant it to us. Probably it had been the dearest object of Philemon's desires to have all his household saved; but it was not at first granted him in its fulness. He had a wicked servant, Onesimus, who, having wronged him, ran away from his service. His master's prayers followed him, and at last, as God would have it, Onesimus was led to hear Paul preach; his heart was touched, and he returned to Philemon, not only to be a faithful servant, but a brother beloved, adding another member to the Church in Philemon's house. Is there an unconverted servant or child absent this morning? Make special supplication that such may, on their return to their home, gladden all hearts with good news of what grace has done! Is there one present? Let him partake in the same earnest entreaty.
If there be such a Church in our house, let us order it well, and let all act as in the sight of God. Let us move in the common affairs of life with studied holiness, diligence, kindness, and integrity. More is expected of a Church than of an ordinary household; family worship must, in such a case, be more devout and hearty; internal love must be more warm and unbroken, and external conduct must be more sanctified and Christlike. We need not fear that the smallness of our number will put us out of the list of Churches, for the Holy Spirit has here enrolled a family-church in the inspired book of remembrance. As a Church let us now draw nigh to the great head of the one Church universal, and let us beseech him to give us grace to shine before men to the glory of his name.

30 Oct, 00:24

They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.

And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.

He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain, nfor he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.

Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.

And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before Him.

And crying out with a loud voice, he said, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me."

For He was saying to him, "Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!"

And Jesus asked him, "What is your name?" He replied, "My name is Legion, for we are many."

And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.

Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged Him, saying, "Send us to the pigs; let us enter them."

So He gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out, and entered the pigs, and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and were drowned in the sea.

The herdsmen fled and told it in the city and in the country. And people came to see what it was that had happened.

And they came to Jesus and saw the demon-possessed man, the one who had had the legion, sitting there, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.

And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs.

And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region.

As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed with demons begged Him that he might be with Him.

And He did not permit him but said to him, "Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how He has had mercy on you."

And he went away and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how much Jesus had done for him, and everyone marveled.

However discouraged you may feel, your flagging heart never lies beyond the reach of Christ. No matter how troubled, how unsettled, how fickle, how disoriented, how despondent, Jesus can handle your ailing heart. “There are many sorts of broken hearts,” says Charles Spurgeon, “and Christ is good at healing them all.”
Jesus knows the human heart. He made it, and then he took one himself when he became man. He knows, as both God and man, how to furnish courage to a fearful heart. He knows how to parcel joy to a sad heart. He is adept, and proven, at giving strength, in perfect portion, to a weak heart; peace to an anxious heart; forgiveness to a guilty heart; and wholeness to a broken heart.
And how does he choose, over and over again, to do so? He speaks. What would he have us do when our hearts are wilting? Rehear his words.

God’s Grace Is Sufficient

Paul was doing a great work for the Lord, but God knows the heart of all men and He knew that Paul could become puffed up with pride due to the great revelations that God was giving to the Church through him. The mysteries that Paul was being shown, had been kept hidden for ages and generations, but now were being revealed to the saints of God through Paul. No wonder the Lord gave Paul a thorn in the flesh, which caused him to be tried, tested, beaten, and buffeted to the extreme of his endurance.

We do not know the exact nature of Paul's 'thorn' but we do know that in addition to this satanic 'messenger' God permitted His bond~servant to experience significant suffering, dangers, hardship, and rejection. But in the midst of all this trouble, the Lord gave Paul a message that has been a comfort to countless saints, down through the ages: "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness."

Paul repeatedly pleaded with the Lord to have this thorn in his flesh removed, but the reply he received from the Lord Jesus was very different from the answer he had expected. Paul was told that although the Lord would not remove this thorn in the flesh, he would be given God's grace to bear it.

Paul was not only able to rejoice in his sufferings, but was enabled to glorify in them as well: "Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me."

What a great testimony to the grace of God and the power of Christ, which is made perfect in our weaknesses. No matter what you and I are facing and no matter what tests and trials we may be required to face, we have God's full assurance that His grace is sufficient for all eventualities that may come our way.

May we like Paul be able to boast all the more gladly in our own weaknesses and frailty so that the power of Christ may rest upon us, to the praise of His name. Hallelujah! Amen!

God bless you all.

Every once in a while, a ewe will give birth to a lamb and reject it. There are many reasons she may do this. If the lamb is returned to the ewe, the mother may even kick the poor animal away. Once a ewe rejects one of her lambs, she will never change her mind.
These little lambs will hang their heads so low that it looks like something is wrong with its neck. Their spirit is broken.
These lambs are called “bummer lambs.” Unless the Shepherd intervenes, that lamb will die, rejected and alone. So, do you know what the Shepherd does?
He takes that rejected little one into His home, hand-feeds it and keeps it warm by the fire. He will wrap it up with blankets and hold it to His chest so the bummer can hear His heartbeat. Once the lamb is strong enough, the Shepherd will place it back in the field with the rest of the flock.
But that sheep never forgets how the Shepherd cared for him when his mother rejected him. When the Shepherd calls for the flock, guess who runs to Him first?
That is right, the bummer sheep. He knows His voice intimately.
It is not that the bummer lamb is loved more, it just knows intimately the One who loves it and has experienced that love one on one.
So many of us are bummer lambs, rejected and broken. But He is the good Shepherd. He cares for our every need and holds us close to His heart so we can hear His heartbeat.
I am a bummer lamb adopted and loved by The Good Shepherd!!

Paul's Visions and His Thorn

"I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord.

I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven--whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows.

And I know that this man was caught up into paradise--whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows--and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter.

On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses.

Though if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me.

So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations,a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.

Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me.

But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Trusting through Trials
God does not promise we will avoid difficulties and trials in life. In fact, while there are punishments for disobedience that we must endure, often, it is following God’s path that positions us in a place of trouble. The important thing to remember in those moments is that God is still faithful. The presence of trouble is not a sign that He has abandoned us. Instead, it should be an incentive for us to trust Him more.
Sometimes we hold back from doing what we should because it will be hard. Faith sees the difficulty, but it also sees that God will be with us. F. B. Meyer wrote, “Never dread any consequence resulting from absolute obedience to His command. Never fear the rough waters ahead...Dare to trust Him! Dare to follow Him! Then discover that the forces that blocked your progress and threatened your life become at His command the very materials He uses to build your street of freedom.”
There is no growth without struggle. Trees that face strong winds put down deep roots so they can stand in the storms. The Christian life is not meant to be an easy one.“And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). While trials may be hard, we are never alone. No Christian has ever endured a trial that did not first go through God’s hands.
Growth Principle:
Nothing that happens to you takes God by surprise, and no need is beyond His ability to meet.

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."
Hebrews 4:12

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever."
Psalm 23

"The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"
Psalm 27:1

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah"
Psalm 46:1-3

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the LORD, "My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."
Psalm 91:1-2

"Walking In The Spirit"
56 of 70

... 6 So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. 7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.
2 Corinthians 5:6-8 (NKJV)

... [(5:8 Paul was not only confident {v.6} that he was going to be with the Lord, he was pleased that he would be with the Lord after his death. This is one of the passages in the New Testament that indicates where believers will go immediately after their death; they will be with Jesus in heaven. {see also Phil 1:23}. Jesus' promise to the repentant criminal on the cross next to Him indicates this: "Today you will be with Me in Paradise".) (Thomas Nelson's NKJV Study Bible 1997)]

The Greatness of God
Are you getting to know the one true God—or has your view of Him been based on an unreliable source?

Isaiah 40:12-31
If you ask a group what God is like, you’ll likely get different replies. Most of the time, the answers reveal more about the speakers than about God. In fact, the truth about God might surprise you.
As the Father reveals Himself in Scripture, one word that’s never used in referring to Him is “it.” God is a person; in every reference, He is given a name (Yahweh, Elohim, Lord) or referred to by masculine pronouns (He, Him). He has all of the attributes of personhood—intelligence to reason, emotions to feel, and the will to make decisions.
Scripture also shows God’s immutability. Neither the Lord’s nature nor His character ever changes—He is always Spirit, and His love remains constant. We can all expect that God’s principles will hold true and that He will act exactly as He has promised. Delight, anger, and other feelings are not new traits but part of His being, and His emotions are always an appropriate fit for each situation.
God is eternal—He has no beginning or end (Psalm 90:2) and is the same yesterday, today, and forever. No one created Him; He simply is. That’s hard for humans to understand, as His ways sometimes are (Romans 11:33). But we should be thankful our God is far greater than what we are able to grasp.
