Election Fraud Cases: Acting Chief Magistrate Rules for Expedited Summary Trial
Acting Chief Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty has ruled that the election fraud cases stemming from Guyana’s contentious 2020 national elections will proceed summarily, prioritising expediency and public interest. Delivering her decision on Monday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, Magistrate Mc Gusty emphasised that the prolonged duration of the case and its significant public interest necessitated a summary trial. According to her, this approach aims to avoid further delays and expedite the administration of justice.Typically, an indictable process involves a preliminary inquiry or paper committal proceeding to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to send the case to the High Court. However, by proceeding summarily, the trial will be conducted directly by the magistrate, significantly reducing procedural delays. The defence, led by Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes, had ...

Opinion Desk: PPP/C drills 41 wells in Reg. 9, outpacing APNU+AFC’s 9 in five years

While that might sound like an achievement at first glance, it pales in comparison to what the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) administration has accomplished in just four years. Here is the reality: Even if we assume Ferguson’s claim about nine wells is accurate, the PPP/C has drilled 41 wells in Region Nine in less time – nearly five times as many. This is not just a statistic; it represents tangible benefits for residents of Region Nine, who now have greater access to water than ever before. In 2020, when the APNU+AFC’s tenure ended, only 60 per cent of Region Nine resi...
