As Air India and Vistara have finally merged, the Indian aviation sector has finally become a duopoly.

In October 2024, domestic air passenger traffic grew 5.3% to 1.36 crore passengers vs the same month last year.

- Indigo carried 86.40 lakh passengers and achieved a market share of 63.3%, whereas Air India carried 38.91 lakh passengers and achieved a market share of 28.5%.

- SpiceJet's and Akasa's market shares were only 2.4% and 5.4%, respectively.

- The two major carriers now have more than a 90% share in the domestic aviation space, and with both SpiceJet and Akasa struggling, we finally have a duopoly upon us.

Zomato completes $1 billion or ₹8500 crore QIP.

- Motilal Oswal picks 20.81% stake in this QIP through its 8 mutual fund schemes.
- Kotak picks 5.95%, HDFC picks 8.86% and ICICI picks 12.78%, all through different mutual funds schemes.

- Motilal Oswal also invested more than $100 million earlier this month in Zepto through its private wealth unit.

- Zomato will now have cash balance of ₹20,000 crore. Zomato keeps this cash balance in treasuries and earn interest from it. Zomato earned ₹255 crore in Q1FY25 and ₹227 crore in Q2FY25, which will increase since they have more cash now.

- Zomato’s profit after tax for first six months of FY25 was ₹429 crore and this interest earned on treasury gives them extra cushioning in case things go a bit out of hands.

- Most affected categories is SmartWatch which is down 44.8% YOY and Earwear is down 7.5%.

- Two of the biggest players both Boat and Noise gained some market share in YOY but both the companies saw decline in growth.

- Boat 3Q24 market share is 32.1% vs 29.8% YOY, growth decline of 14.5%.

Reliance has a market cap of $200 billion or ₹17.6 lakh crore. JIO’s IPO valuation is estimated to be at $100 billion.

- Digital services or Jio forms 13% of total Reliance’s gross revenue and 33% of Reliance’s EBIT (as of Q2 2024 financials).

- Company has 489 million mobile subscribers and its third largest mobile network operator in the world, 1st in India.

- There are two scenarios : If we go by this news, it’s huge value locking for Reliance shareholders. Imagine just $100 billion for Jio and other $100 billion for rest of Reliance. When conglomerates demergers, usually value unlocking happens, which benefits shareholders.

- There could also be a scenario that this news may be an attempt to bring in positive sentiments for share price since Reliance industries is down 20% from ATH.

Nonetheless, I am personally invested in Reliance as part of my long term portfolio and will see how the events unfold.
