Gustave Doré: Illustrator of Immortal Works
Gustave Doré, born January 6, 1832 in Strasbourg, France, was an incredibly talented artist known for his intricate engravings and illustrations. He showed a talent for drawing at a young age, and at age 15 he moved to Paris to begin his career.
Throughout his life, he moved to various places, including the UK, to advance his career. Doré established strong partnerships with major publishers in France and the UK, illustrating famous literary works by Cervantes, Rabelais, Balzac, Milton, Dante and many others.
His main source of income came from these commissions, and he worked on a variety of publications, such as the Bible, Dante's Divine Comedy, Perrault's Mother Goose, Pierre Benoit's Atlantis, Milton's Paradise Lost, and Cervantes' Don Quixote.
Doré's romantic style proved adaptable to a variety of subjects, and his detailed book illustrations, expressive and dynamic, were in great demand during the rise of mass literacy in the 19th century. His studio, equipped to manage an extensive woodcut production facility, played an important role in translating his designs into books.
Doré also worked as a cartoonist and magazine illustrator. He used a variety of techniques in his work, but is best known for his woodcuts.
