The video, which was shared on social media platforms, shows a dog walking away while the man recording the video can be heard stating, "This dog is carrying a human head."
Local reports speculate the dog may have grabbed the head after it was left behind at a BBVA ATM branch on Colegio Militar street, on top of two threatening messages. The messages, commonly referred to as 'narcomessages', threatened an individual identified as Jaime Roman Chavez, known as 'El MZ 5.3'. Authorities added that they recovered the head but have not yet recovered the rest of the body.
In early September, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) commended a reduction of homicides in the state. The Secretary of National Defense, General Luis Crescencio Sandoval, stated that since the implementation of the Zacatecas II Security Plan, between November 26, 2021, to July of this year, there has been a 51.5% reduction in homicides linked to organized crime. However, Zacatecas has consistently remained one of the country's top 10 most violent states and ranks first in the nation for extortion. Despite crediting a reduction in homicides to the Zacatecas II Security Plan, the General acknowledged an upward trend in extortion and intentional homicide.
Violence in the state has consistently increased due to the war between the Grupo Flechas and C@rtel del Escorpion, both armed wings of the Cartel de Sinaloa, against the CJNG. The state is a highly coveted transit point for drug trafficking, especially fentanyl, due to two crucial federal highways that connect it to the US border states of Tamaulipas and Chihuahua. According to the state Secretary of Public Security, up to 90% of homicides in Zacatecas are linked to organized crime.
