Gold Struggles Amid Fed Policy and Strong Dollar

- Gold prices closed last week at $2,623.61, marking a 0.95% weekly loss. Despite a peak at $2,790.17 in early November, the metal has struggled to regain upward momentum. Resistance levels remain at $2,663.51 and $2,726.30, with key support at $2,571.68 and $2,533.76.

- The Federal Reserve’s hawkish policy continues to weigh on gold, with the Fed projecting just two rate cuts in 2025. This has heightened the opportunity cost of holding gold as Treasury yields rise, with the 10-year yield reaching 4.40%. A strong U.S. dollar, with the DXY index at 107.18, has also dampened gold demand, making it more expensive for international buyers.

- Gold saw a brief reprieve after weaker-than-expected PCE inflation data in November caused the dollar to dip by 0.4%. However, this was insufficient to signal a dovish shift in Federal Reserve policy, keeping the outlook cautious.

- Looking ahead a sustained cooling of inflation or signs of economic slowdown could weaken the dollar and lower yields, both of which would boost gold. Geopolitical risks may also revive safe-haven demand. Until these factors align, gold’s near-term outlook leans bearish, with limited prospects for a sustained rally.

Gold Prices Outlook: Bear Flag Signals Potential Decline Toward Key Support Levels

- Gold is currently showing a “bear flag” pattern, a sign of potential bearish continuation. Resistance levels to watch include the 50-Day Moving Average (MA) at $2,669 and the 20-Day MA at $2,635. A daily close above these levels would indicate strength, but they currently cap the recovery.

- Support has been seen at $2,632, near the lower edge of the flag. A drop below $2,622, the recent swing low, would confirm bearish momentum. If the bear flag pattern breaks down, gold could target lower levels, including $2,537 (previous swing low), $2,534 (50% Fibonacci retracement), and a support range of $2,470–$2,487, which aligns with key technical targets.

- In the long term, the 200-Day MA at $2,441 remains critical. This level has provided strong support since October 2023 and could be tested again if the current downtrend continues.

Gold Market—Prices are Steady as Investors Await Key Economic Data, Powell’s Speech

- Gold prices remained flat on Wednesday as trading volume and volatility stayed low for the seventh consecutive session, signaling investor indecision ahead of major economic events.

- Gold is currently in a downtrend, with resistance between $2663.51 and $2693.40 and support from $2629.13 to $2607.35. The main top is at $2790.17, with a secondary lower top at $2721.42. A break below $2536.85 would confirm a continuation of the downtrend, while a move above $2721.42 would signal an upward trend reversal. The 50-day moving average at $2668.98 acts as resistance, reinforcing bearish sentiment.

- The U.S. dollar index (DXY) has risen slightly, making gold more expensive for foreign buyers and adding downward pressure. However, geopolitical risks, including political instability in South Korea and France, have bolstered safe-haven demand, partially offsetting the dollar’s strength.

- Traders are focused on key data releases, including the Nonfarm payrolls, and next week’s CPI data, as well as Jerome Powell’s upcoming comments. The FedWatch Tool shows a 74% chance of a 25-basis-point rate cut on December 18, which could support gold by lowering the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets.

For now gold is likely to remain rangebound unless economic data or Powell’s statements shift market expectations significantly. A break above $2693.40 could push prices higher, while a drop below $2607.35 may trigger further declines. For now, the outlook remains cautiously bearish.

- Gold is currently trading near $2,630 with the $2,626 pivot level acting as a critical decision point for its next move.

- The weaker U.S. dollar is providing support to gold prices, as a softer dollar makes gold more affordable for non-dollar holders. The recent dollar decline stems from profit-taking after last week’s rally, which saw the dollar in an overbought state.

- Speculation surrounding Federal Reserve rate policy is also influencing the market. Traders are pricing in a 58.9% probability of a 25-basis-point rate cut in December, according to CME data. This speculation, combined with upcoming comments from Fed officials this week, is keeping investors focused on the potential for further monetary easing. Geopolitical risks, such as Russia’s recent large-scale airstrikes on Ukraine, add to gold’s safe-haven appeal, further supporting prices.

- Technical perspective, the $2,626 pivot level is critical. A sustained move above this level could trigger a bullish breakout, with resistance targets at $2,644, $2,659, and $2,676. Relationship between volume (Effort) and price movement (Result) to understand market behaviour

Effort: This is the trading volume, which shows the level of buying or selling activity.
Result: This is the price movement that happens because of that trading activity.

Interpretations

1. Effort Equal to Result:
High volume leading to a significant price move suggests the market is moving naturally in the trend's direction.

2. Effort Greater Than Result:
High volume with little price movement may indicate a potential reversal, as buying or selling pressure is being absorbed.

3. Effort Less Than Result:
Large price movement on low volume might suggest the move is weak and could reverse.

•Absorption:
- During trends, high volume with little price movement can indicate that big players are preparing for a move in the opposite direction.

•Climactic Action:
- A sharp price move on very high volume can signal the end of a trend.

•Testing:
- After a strong move, a small price change on low volume might confirm the trend's strength.
