Compaction:

Soil compaction is the process of mechanically increasing the soil’s density by reducing the air void space between its particles. This densification leads to several desirable outcomes, including higher bearing capacity, reduced permeability, and improved stability.

The basic laboratory test used to determine the maximum dry density of compacted soils is the Proctor test. In construction, the maximum dry density and its corresponding optimum moisture content are obtained from the proctor test. This is used as a guide in the field to check the effectiveness of the compaction achieved.

Several approaches exist for evaluating soil compaction in the field and laboratory. Here are a few prominent methods:
Standard Proctor Compaction Test: This classic test involves compacting soil samples in a cylindrical mould at varying moisture contents and measuring the resulting dry density. The relationship between moisture content and dry density is plotted to determine the optimum moisture content (OMC) for achieving maximum density at a specified compaction effort.

Modified Proctor Compaction Test: This method employs higher compaction energy compared to the standard test, simulating the harsher conditions encountered in certain construction projects. The OMC and maximum dry density for the modified test are typically higher than those obtained for the standard test.

Phreatic Line: The top flow line of a saturated soil mass below which seepage takes place, is called the Phreatic line.

Hydrostatic pressure acts below the phreatic line whereas atmospheric pressure exists above the phreatic line.

This line separates a saturated soil mass from an unsaturated soil mass.

It is not an equipotential line, but a flow line.

PROCEDURE OF SLUMP FLOW TEST:

About 6 liters of concrete is needed for this test. Place the baseplate on level ground keep the slump cone centrally on the base plate. Fill the cone with scoop. Do not tap. Simply strike of the concrete level with the trowel. Remove the surplus concrete lying on-base plate. Raise the cone vertically and allow the concrete to flow freely at maximum distance. Measure the final diameter of the concrete in two perpendicular directions and calculate the average of the two diameter. This is the slump flow in mm. when the slump cone is lifted T50 slump flow is the taken for the concrete to reach a 500 mm mark. Time to be measured by a stop watch. It is suggested the T50 time may be 2 to 5 seconds.

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a special type of concrete which can be placed and consolidated under it’s own weight without any vibration effort due to it’s excellent deformability, and which at the same time is cohesive enough to be handled without segregation or bleeding.

WORKABILITY:
The workability of self-compacting concrete is measured by the usual slump cone having a base diameter of 200 mm, top dia 100 mm, and height 300 mm. The slump cone is to be placed as usual upon a base plate square in shape is having at least a 700 mm side. Concentric circles are marked around the center point where cone is to place. A firm circle is drawn at 500 mm diameter.

Grit chamber may be designed on a rational basis by considering it as a sedimentation basin. The grit particles are treated as discrete particles settling with their own settling velocities. The settling velocity is governed by the size and specific gravity of the grit particles to be separated and the viscosity of the sewage.

The minimum size of grit to be removed is 0.2 mm although 0.15 mm is preferred for conditions where considerable amount of ash is likely to be carried in the sewage. The specific gravity of girt may be as low as 2.4 but for design purposes a value of 2.65 is used.
