🇺🇸 MS Graduate Assistantship Opportunity: Remote Sensing and Ecological Modeling of Rangeland Plant CommunitiesPosition Overview:Dr. Sean Di Stéfano at
South Dakota State University (SDSU) is seeking a
highly motivated Master’s student for a fully funded assistantship focused on applying remote sensing technologies to advance ecological modeling and improve our understanding of rangeland plant community dynamics. This research will integrate cutting-edge remote sensing data with ecological models to study vegetation patterns in grazing systems of the
northern Great Plains.
Key Responsibilities: •
Remote Sensing Data Acquisition: Collect and process datasets (e.g., UAV and satellite imagery) to analyze vegetation cover, biomass, and species composition on rangelands.
•
Ecological Modeling: Integrate remote sensing data into models such as APEX to simulate plant community dynamics.
•
Data Analysis: Use GIS tools and programming languages (e.g., R, Python) to assess spatial and temporal vegetation patterns in relation to environmental drivers and management regimes.
•
Dissemination: Collaborate on peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and stakeholder reports.
Required Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Range Science, Natural Resources, Ecology, Environmental Science, Geography, or related fields.
• Familiarity with
remote sensing techniques and tools (e.g., UAVs, satellite imagery).
• Interest in rangeland ecosystems, plant ecology, and sustainable land management.
• Strong ability to collaborate in a team setting.
Preferred Qualifications: • Experience with
GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and programming languages (e.g., R, Python).
• Prior research in
remote sensing, ecological modeling, or rangeland ecology.
• Knowledge of process-based ecological models (e.g., APEX, DayCent).
• Proficiency in statistical analysis and technical writing.
Funding and Support: •
Full tuition waiver and stipend for two years (based on satisfactory performance).
• Opportunities for conference travel, professional development, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Location: South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD
Start Date: Fall 2025 (or earlier if available)
