Animal Literature

10.11.2024

Animal literature is a fascinating genre that portrays animals either as main characters or as symbols to explore human traits, social themes and moral lessons to portray human conflicts and political motives. This genre is seen in many cultures and has been spreading from one era to another era by taking many forms. In English literature, sea and land animals serve symbolically, metaphorically and as protagonists to explore themes of nature, survival and human characteristics. There are some notable sea animals including the great white whale in โ€œMoby-Dickโ€ by Herman Melville, symbolizing the mystery and danger of nature. Hemingwayโ€™s Marlin in โ€œThe Old Manโ€ and the Sea embodies endurance and respect for nature. โ€œThe Whale Riderโ€ by Witi Ihimaera deals with the bond between humans and whales highlighting cultural heritage and harmony with nature. โ€œThe Sea Around Usโ€ by Rachel Carson finds the ecological complexity of marine life by emphasizing conservation. In opposition, โ€œJawsโ€ by Peter Benchley uses the shark to represent primal fear and the impact of such fears on people. On land, the animal characters reveal human social dynamics. โ€œAnimal Farmโ€ by George Orwell uses farm animals to critique political corruption. โ€œWhite Fangโ€ by Jack London follows a wolf-dogโ€™s journey portraying survival and adaptation. โ€œCharlotteโ€™s Webโ€ by E.B. White focuses on friendship and life cycles through the characters of Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider. Yann Martelโ€™s โ€œLife of Piโ€ uses a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker to explore survival and faith. โ€œAlice in Wonderlandโ€ by Carroll presents themes of fantasy. Kiplingโ€™s โ€œThe Jungle Bookโ€ examines survival laws with characters like Baloo the bear and Shere Khan the tiger. It also reveals the colonial and opposition of colonialism. Animals and birds have been used in much literature across the world. In Tamil literature, cows, bulls, cuckoos, peacocks, and swans are seen in certain works. Animals embody human virtues and vices and portray the rift between man and nature. The works' motif helps inspire care and respect for the environment by encouraging empathy and ethical reflection on the natural world from human beings. Hence, this webinar will discuss Animal imagery and symbolism in Literature and evine the goals of โ€˜SDG 15 - Life on Landโ€™ to provide a sustainable life for other living beings. Papers can also be sent to [email protected] No APC.
