For those who are confused:
โขโNo income tax up to โน12 lakhโ means the rebate has been increased, ensuring no tax liability for incomes up to this limit.
โขHowever, if your income exceeds โน12 lakh, even by โน1 (i.e., โน12,00,001), you will have to pay tax as per the slabs:
โขโน4-8 lakh โ 5% tax
โขโน8-12 lakh โ 10% tax
โขIf your total income is โน12 lakh (without capital gains), you will not be liable to pay any tax.
โขHowever, if you have short-term (STCG) or long-term capital gains (LTCG), those will be taxed as per the applicable slab rates.
