RBI was expecting Indiaโ€™s GDP to grow at 7% in the Jul-Sep quarter.

But, Indiaโ€™s economy grew by just 5.4% โ€” the lowest in the last 7 quarters.

So, what went wrong?

And what could this mean for your investments?

Letโ€™s break it down. ๐Ÿ‘‡

REASONS FOR DRAMATIC SLOWDOWN

One major reason for this worse-than-expected slowdown is that Indiaโ€™s manufacturing sector has taken a hit. It only grew by 2.2% in this quarter, which is a huge drop compared to 7% growth last quarter and 14.3% a year ago.

Another key reason is the slowdown in private consumption. This is crucial because private consumption makes up about 60% of Indiaโ€™s GDP.

People are spending less, especially in urban areas, because of rising food prices, higher loan rates, and slow salary growth.

Nomura, a big global brokerage house, has said that the RBI is being โ€œoverly optimisticโ€ about Indiaโ€™s growth for this financial year. They believe growth could be much lower than the RBIโ€™s forecast.

Why? Multiple key indicators of urban consumption like car sales have seen a sharp decline in growth.

Big FMCG companies like HUL and Nestle India have posted weak results for the June-September quarter. In fact, many top Indian companies reported their worst quarterly performance in over four years during the July-September period.

This raises concerns that a slowing economy is starting to hit
corporate profits.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOUR INVESTMENTS?

A shocker like this usually leads to a correction in equities, so volatility in the short-term is quite possible.

So, if you are expecting the returns that markets have delivered in the last few years, you may need to tone down your expectations.

What should you do?

The answer is quite boring. Stick to your asset allocation through periodic rebalancing. This will automatically ensure you are booking profits from overvalued assets and investing in fairly valued or undervalued investments.

What you shouldnโ€™t do?

You shouldn't stop investing during these turbulent times. Because this is the time that offers opportunities to invest in great businesses at reasonable valuations.

Morning Alert..
*S&P Global cuts India's FY26 GDP growth forecast to 6.7% from 6.9%*
Credit ratings agency S&P Global on Monday pared down its growth forecast for India to 6.7 per cent in FY26 from the earlier estimate of 6.9 per cent. However, in its latest quarterly economic update for Asia-Pacific, the rating agency maintained its growth forecast for the current financial year (FY25) at 6.8 per cent as โ€œhigh interest rates and a lower fiscal impulse temper urban demandโ€. โ€œWhile purchasing manager indices (PMIs) remain convincingly in the expansion zone, other high-frequency indicators show some transitory softening of growth momentum due to the hit to the construction sector in the September quarter,โ€ the update noted. The update also highlighted that persistent food inflation is delaying rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the central bank is expected to cut the policy rate only once in the current financial year. โ€œConsumer inflation is fueled by supply shocks in agriculture, which have driven up food prices. These shocks are linked to changing rainfall patterns and climate change-driven heatwaves. Traditionally volatile and hard to predict, food inflation has become even more capricious lately. The RBI cannot ignore food inflation when considering rate cuts. Food items make up nearly 46 per cent of the inflation basket and persistently high food inflation raises inflationary expectations,โ€ the update said.

Morning Alert..
*Major port cargo contracts 3.2% to 68 mt in October, shows govt data*
Central government-owned ports, also known as major ports, recorded a rare 3.2 per cent year on year (Y-o-Y) contraction in their cargo volumes during October, primarily due to a fall in crude oil and coal shipments, according to government data. Traffic handled at the 12 major ports decreased last month to 68.22 million metric tonnes (mmt). Approximately, a fourth of this cargo arrived through coastal shipping. Overseas cargo handled by these ports decreased by 5.5 per cent to 52.9 mmt in October, while domestic cargo shipped through coastal waters increased by 5.3 per cent on-year to 15.9 mmt. Crude Oil, which accounts for almost a fifth of the entire traffic, contracted in volumes by 8.8 per cent to 12.9 mmt, while overall volumes of petroleum products also fell, the data reveals. Coal, also among the largest revenue generators for ports, showed a Y-o-Y contraction of 13 per cent, led by a large fall in non-thermal coal cargo. October typically sees higher movement of goods due to increased consumer spending in the festival season. Container volumes at state-owned ports in October remained flat (-0.2 per cent). In contrast, Indiaโ€™s merchandise exports showed a 28-month fastest pace of growth at 17 per cent, primarily led by inventory build-up in the West as the Christmas and New Year season approaches.

Morning Alert..
*FPI-FDI transition to give overseas funds more elbow room, say experts*
With the new operational framework for reclassifying foreign portfolio investors (FPI) as foreign direct investment (FDI) upon breaching the 10 per cent threshold, certain overseas funds are set to get more flexibility in their India investments, experts said. There are around 17 companies listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) where a single FPI has holdings of up to 9 per cent, according to data provided by Primeinfobase. A majority of these are based out of popular jurisdiction destinations such as Mauritius and Singapore. These investors, if they wish to take their holdings above 10 per cent in an investee company, will now also have the option to either divest stake or reclassify as FDI upon approval from the government. โ€œThis relaxation meets one of the demands of certain funds which want to take a higher exposure in Indian companies especially mid-caps where the 10 per cent limit became restrictive. The enabling framework can now be implemented because the operational process has been specified,โ€ said Rajesh Gandhi, partner, Deloitte. While the norms for reclassification were already present in the Foreign Exchange Management Act (Fema), in absence of operational guidelines, industry players have maintained status quo. Earlier this week, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) issued the broad contours for FPI--FDI transition.

Morning Alert..
*Oct retail inflation rises to 14-month high of 6.2%; IIP picked up in Sep*
Retail inflation galloped to a 14-month high of 6.2 per cent in October, spurred by a spike in food prices, thus breaching the upper threshold of the Reserve Bank of Indiaโ€™s (RBI) target range. This sharp increase apparently extinguishes any remaining hopes of a policy rate cut when the RBIโ€™s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) convenes from December 4-6. Separately, industrial production appears to be on the rebound. The index of industrial production (IIP) grew by 3.1 per cent in September, buoyed by festival-driven demand, reversing a contraction in August. Data released the National Statistical Office (NSO) revealed that Consumer Price Index (CPI)-based food inflation on a year-on-year basis surged to 10.87 per cent in October โ€” the highest in 15 months โ€” fuelled by soaring prices for vegetables (up 42.18 per cent), fruit (8.43 per cent), oils and fats (9.51 per cent), and cereals (6.94 per cent). ICRAโ€™s Chief Economist Aditi Nayar noted that with CPI inflation expected to exceed the MPCโ€™s estimate of 4.8 per cent for the December quarter of FY25 by 60-70 basis points, the prospect of a rate cut in the upcoming policy review appears โ€œruled outโ€, despite her projection of sub-7 per cent GDP growth for the September quarter. โ€œWe anticipate a shallow rate cut cycle of 50 basis points may commence in February 2025 or later,โ€ she added.

Morning Alert..
*FPIs withdrew around Rs 20,000 cr from equities in last 5 trading sessions*
The exodus of foreign investments from Indian equity markets continued unabated, with FPIs pulling out nearly Rs 20,000 crore in the last five trading sessions on higher valuations of domestic stocks and shifting their allocation to China. As a result, foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have turned net sellers in the equity market, with total outflows reaching Rs 13,401 crore for 2024 so far. Going ahead, the FPI selling trend is likely to continue in the near term till data indicate the possibility of a trend reversal. If the Q3 results and leading indicators reflect a recovery in earnings, the scenario can change with FPIs reducing selling and even turning buyers. Investors will have to wait and watch for the data, VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services, said. With the newly elected US president not assuming office until January 2025, the Indian market's near-term direction will be more influenced by domestic factors like the Maharashtra assembly election results, corporate earnings commentaries, and retail investor behaviour in response to the October and early November downturn, Sunil Damania, Chief Investment Officer, MojoPMS, said.

Morning Alert..
*Rupee hits another low on rise in crude oil prices, equity selloff*
The rupee depreciated to a fresh low of 84.38 per dollar on Thursday as foreign investors continued to sell domestic equities and crude oil prices rose. The caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve meeting outcome further weighed on the Indian unit. Market participants said that with strengthening dollar and rise in US yields after the US presidential election results, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been allowing gradual depreciation of the rupee in line with its Asian peers. The local currency had touched a new low of 84.28 per dollar on Wednesday after Republican candidate Donald Trump won the 47th United States (US) presidential election decisively, defying expectations and securing a greater number of votes than Kamala Harris. โ€œIt seems the RBI has gone slow on its sales of dollar after the rise in US yields, expecting more outflow from FPIs in the coming monthsโ€ฆ With Asian currencies down, US dollar up, and yields up, the RBI does not have any option but to allow the rupee to fall to ensure that REER (Real Effective Exchange Rate) remains competitive for our exports. If the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) is a bit hawkish in its tone or does not cut rates today, or says it will not cut in December, then we could see another fall in rupee to the extent of 84.50 in a slow and steady up move.

CITI INDIA STRATEGY----

Trump win is widely considered to imply a stronger onger dol dollar, rising US rates and trade policy uncertainty

For India, a stronger dollar is negative in absolute sense

But relatively, within EM context, is subject to drivers of rotation trade into China

Impact of trade policy uncertainty is relatively lower as largely domestic oriented economy

Listed universe has limited exposure to goods trade with US

Medium term, we believe domestic consumption/investment growth trends will dictate India earnings

Valuations have come off peak but remain well above long term averages

*Rupee hits new low; yet second best performer among Asian currencies*
The rupee fell 0.20 per cent on Wednesday to settle at a new low of 84.28 per dollar, marking the largest single-day decline since June 20 this year. However, it was the best-performing Asian currency after the Hong Kong dollar. The rupee had closed at 84.11 on Tuesday. The Thai baht and Japanese yen depreciated the most against the greenback with 1.92 per cent and 1.66 per cent depreciation, respectively. The local currency fell as Republican candidate Donald Trump won the 47th United States (US) presidential election decisively, defying expectations and securing a greater number of nationwide votes than Kamala Harris. Trump is seen as a proponent of a strong dollar and his stance is a factor in pushing US yields higher, driven by anticipated populist measures that could increase borrowing, inflation, and yield. Trump has pledged to implement a 10 per cent tariff on imports from all countries and impose a 60 per cent duty on Chinese goods.

Morning Alert..
*India's shadow lenders retreat as bad loans increase amid crackdown*
Six years after the countryโ€™s shadow-banking sector blew up, pockets of stress are building again, prompting firms to start pulling back amid scrutiny from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Bajaj Finance, Indiaโ€™s largest non-banking financial company (NBFC), joined rivals including Shriram Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services, and IIFL Finance that posted higher delinquencies on unsecured loans in their second quarter earnings reports. Most firms also set aside more capital for provisions and had lower profits than expected. The โ€œGoldilocksโ€ moment for lenders riding the wave of demand for loans from retail customers while maintaining clean balance sheets may have clouded. These firms are grappling with an increase in bad loans, margin compression and intense competition for deposits, according to bankers and analysts. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said last month that even though the overall sector remains healthy, there are outliers who pursue an โ€œimprudent, growth-at-any-cost approach,โ€ which is counter productive. A week later, the central bank stopped new loans at four shadow banks. NBFCs accounted for 15 per cent of assets in the financial system as of March 2023, according to the RBI. While these lenders boost profits through higher interest rates on loans, theyโ€™re more vulnerable to defaults when the economic cycle turns, according to Moodyโ€™s Ratings.
