GIVING ZAKATUL FITR WITH MONEY

Questioner: Can we give Zakatul Fitr with money?

Dr Sharof: As for Zakatul Fitr which is given at the end of Ramadaan, it is not permissible and also not inline (with the Sharee’ah) to give it with money. The Prophet, blessings and peace be upon him, ordered us to give it with food. There was money and food during the lifetime of the Prophet yet he ordered us to give it with food. At any day or any moment, humans would prefer money to any other thing. If you were to choose between clothes and money, even if the money to be given to you would not be sufficient to buy the clothes, you would still prefer the money. If you were to choose between food and money, you would prefer money to food; he (the person to choose) would say he is in need of money. The Prophet knows this (human’s preference for money) very well; Allaah makes him understand it that way. However, the religion has to be done as ordained; we were ordered to give food.

You are not required to calculate the amount that four handful of rice, four handful of maize or four handful of guinea corn worths and then give the money to someone that you have given Zakaat. If you do that, you have only given charity; you haven’t given the zakatul fitr that Allaah asked you to give at the end of Ramadaan. Na’am.
