COSATU gave notice to the National Economic Development and Labour Council (NEDLAC) of their intention to embark on a nationwide strike on Monday, 7 October 2024. It is important to note that the national strike is due to start at 00:00 and end at 23:59.

The intended protest action stems from COSATU’s demand some years ago that companies must stop retrenchments to maximize profits and allegedly stated that since then they ‘have seen the number of retrenchments increase at alarming rates accompanied by weak economic growth as well as rising costs of living’.

COSATU’s list of demands,

A stop to attacks on ‘Collective Bargaining’ in all sectors

The prevention of crime and corruption
Reduction of high interest rates

Addressing the high and increasing cost of living

An end to job losses and also privatisation

Addressing the high unemployment rate and the creation of ‘decent jobs’

The ‘speedy implementation’ of the Zondo Commission recommendations

The South African Government must ‘stop misplaced pursuit of Austerity measures’

Businesses and the South African Government must agree with COSATU’s labour law reform demands

“We see this strike as crucial issues because it addresses bread and butter issues for the workers.”

They added that ‘about 11.3 million people in our country need jobs but on the one hand workers are retrenched day in and day out through the narrow application of Section 189.

NOTICE TO ALL UBER, BOLT, AND INDRIVER RIDERS IN KZN

Date: 27 August 2024

Dear Valued Riders.
We wish to inform you of an upcoming e-hailing service shutdown in the KwaZulu-Natal region. including Durban, Pietermaritzburg (PMB), Richards Bay, and Port Shepstone.

This shutdown will commence on Monday, September 16, 2024, and is expected to last for approximately three days or until further notice.

This action is being taken in response to several critical issues affecting the livelihood and safety of drivers and vehicle owners who operate on these platforms.

The concerns include:

Excessive Commission Fees: The current commission structure is unsustainable, with drivers and vehicle owners losing up to 40-50% on some trips.

This has led to severe financial strain, making it difficult for us to cover basic expenses such as fuel and vehicle maintenance.

We demand that commission fees be reduced to the agreed-upon rate of 25%.

Safety Concerns:
We are calling for all app users to register with a valid ID and undergo face recognition. This applies to both existing customers and new riders, ensuring that the identity of every user is verified, which will greatly enhance the safety of both drivers and passengers.

Promotional Prices:
We are requesting the removal of certain promotional offers that lack transparency and negatively impact drivers' earnings.
Some trips are priced at promotional rates that do not fairly compensate the drivers, effectively operating at a loss.

Vehicle Age Restrictions:
We demand that the current age limits on vehicles be removed until the vehicles are fully paid off. This will allow drivers to continue operating without the undue financial pressure of having to replace vehicles prematurely.

Uber Radar Trips:
Specifically to Uber, we request the removal of the radar trip option, as it has proven to be unsafe, contributing to accidents and creating dangerous conditions on the road for drivers.

We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and support as we strive to create a fair and safe working environment for all e-hailing service providers in KZN.

To ensure safety, we recommend that all users of e-hailing apps consider using alternative transportation options, as there is a strike targeting Uber, Bolt, and inDriver, which may put users at risk.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
KZN E-HAILING COUNCIL
E-Hailing Service Providers of KZN
