«The Hanging Stranger» by Philip K. Dick

27 November 2024 at 18:45 (MSK)

Venue:
Svetlovka library, Bolshaya Sadovaya st., 1 (metro Mayakovskaya).

During his life, Philip K. Dick managed to marry five times, change three countries of residence — and write almost fifty novels. However, the most exciting novel was his biography itself. More interesting than any book. The biography of a man «who managed to run on the blade …»

The plot of "The Hanging Stranger" follows an ordinary man named Ed Loyce, who discovers a creepy and surreal picture. Trying to make sense of this disturbing sight, Lois finds himself involved in a mysterious flow of events that calls into question his idea of reality.

An episode called “Kill All Others” of the TV series Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams was based on this story.

«The Paper Menagerie» by Ken Liu

20 November 2024 at 18:45 (MSK)

Venue:
Svetlovka library, Bolshaya Sadovaya st., 1 (metro Mayakovskaya).

Ken Liu is an American writer of Chinese descent, a translator of science fiction and fantasy, as well as a lawyer and programmer. He was born in 1976 in Lanzhou and emigrated with his parents to the United States when he was 11 years old. The boy did not speak English at all, but thanks to his love of books, he quickly mastered the language and became an excellent student. Ken Liu tried different professions – he was a software engineer at Microsoft, participated in a high-tech startup in Cambridge, worked as a lawyer, but his hobby has always been literature. Ken Liu wrote short stories for his own pleasure and sometimes published them in various magazines, but he never thought that he would be able to make a living from it.

Fame came to the author in 2011, after the publication of the story "The Paper Menagerie", which instantly became a hit and received several prestigious awards, including Nebula, Hugo and the World Fantasy Award. We will discuss this touching story about maternal love, magic and the relationship between parents and children at the next club meeting.

«Troll Bridge» by Terry Pratchett

13 November 2024 at 18:45 (MSK)

Venue:
Svetlovka library, Bolshaya Sadovaya st., 1 (metro Mayakovskaya).

Last month we read a piece of the same name by Neil Gaiman. This time we will discuss a story by his close friend and co-author of the novel "Good Omens," Terry Pratchett.

Although both stories have the same title and deal with trolls and bridges, the tone, themes, and style of each piece differ from each other, reflecting the unique voices of Pratchett and Gaiman.

Everything has changed in the world, and sensible people prefer to sit at home by the fire, telling stories about heroes. But without heroes, there will be no such stories. And therefore: the old hero, the old horse, the old bridge, the old troll...

"The Colour Out of Space" by Howard Phillips Lovecraft

06 November
2024 at 18:45 (MSK)

Venue:
Svetlovka library, Bolshaya Sadovaya st., 1 (metro Mayakovskaya).

"West of Arkham the hills rise wild, and there are valleys with deep woods that no axe has ever cut. There are dark narrow glens where the trees slope fantastically, and where thin brooklets trickle without ever having caught the glint of sunlight". We invite the members of the club, together with the master of horror H.P. Lovecraft, to plunge into the mystical atmosphere of the "blasted heath" and try to solve the mystery of the tragic events that took place there.

The story "The Colour Out of Space" is considered one of the most frightening works of the American writer, and for the first time his signature blend of science fiction and horror appears in it. Lovecraft himself considered the story to be his best piece of literature.

"Robbie" by Isaac Asimov

30 October
2024 at 18:45 (MSK)

Venue:
Svetlovka library, Bolshaya Sadovaya st., 1 (metro Mayakovskaya).

Next week we will turn to the early work of the American science fiction classic Isaac Asimov. The author wrote short story "Robbie" when he was 19 years old. This was Asimov's first story about a positronic robot, which marked the beginning of his subsequent works on this topic. In 2016, "Robbie" won the Retro-Hugo Award for Best Short Story.

The main character of the story, little Gloria, loved her robot very much. It became indispensable to her, doing for the girl whatever she wanted. Gloria was so attached to Robbie that she stopped playing with other children. Her mother became worried about this and decided to help her daughter.
