Criticism

Apart from sexist and violent comments on social media, 4B and its predecessor movements have seen thoughtful and reasoned criticism too.

Some point out that just cutting off contact with men is not a solution — this puts the onus of staying away from men on the woman, instead of demanding change and accountability from men.

Believing men as incapable of reform can play into the ‘boys will be boys’ school of thought, it is argued.

Meaningful change can come by raising awareness and a sense of responsibility among men, and this can happen by pushing back from within relationships, it is pointed out.

Others point out that such totalising movements can be exclusionary of transgender rights.

Yet others say that these movements rob women of choice: one can be frustrated with inequality but still want children, or in the case of heterosexual women, sexual pleasure.

4B Movement

4B stands for four bis, or no in the Korean language: bihon, bichulsan, biyeonae, and bisekseu,

meaning the refusal of (heterosexual) marriage, childbirth, romance, and sexual relationships, respectively.

4B movement belongs to the strain of radical feminism that believes that heterosexual relationships at their heart remain structures of oppression, and women need to break free of them to be truly independent and happy.

In the Indian context, consider this — marriage often involves dowry, the burden of running the married home and raising the child is disproportionately on women, many women are penalised at their workplaces for motherhood duties, and intimate partner violence is common. While women are supposed to endure all this for the sake of love and duties, there are very little expectations from men except earning money.

The proponents of the 4B movement believe that unless men work more actively for a gender-just society, women should not reward them with children, love, and emotional and other forms of labour.

The movement started in South Korea around 2016, when a young woman was murdered in a Seoul subway station. Her killer said he had “felt ignored by women”. This was also the time when multiple women in South Korea reported having been filmed by spycams in washrooms or while having sex, by strangers as well as men known to them. In many cases, the police were hostile to the victims. The MeToo movement gave further impetus to women talking about their struggles and their rights more vocally.

4B is largely an online movement and it is difficult to measure its impact.

the movement wants women to imagine more roles for themselves than just wife and mother. Women not bogged down by domestic duties and not being controlled by a man can focus on their own aims, hobbies, comfort and happiness, the movement’s followers believe.

They also advocate women building strong solidarities with other women. This includes, but is not limited to, lesbian relationships.

Women can depend on each other for comfort, companionship and emotional support, while working together to achieve common goals.

4B is sometimes expanded to 6B4T, which advocates staying away from firms perceived as misogynist, rejecting the fandom culture, rejecting beauty standards that conform to the male gaze, etc.

I think that in the age of social media, it's important to stop & ask yourself every so often what you would spend your time doing or what you would pour your energy into if these platforms didn't exist. If there wasn't a subconscious pressure to post everything you do. If you didn't have daily access to what millions of strangers are doing.

Then, when you have a few answers, go do them. And remember that your life is yours first. It doesn't have to be aesthetic or photogenic. It doesn't have to be "on trend". It doesn't have to be shared with strangers online in order to matter.

✨Interesting insights from the data provided by UPSC:

1. Out of the people who appeared in the interview last year, most number of people were of 25 years of age(215 of them). 210 people were 26, 190 were 27, 169 were 28 and 125 were 29 when they sat in Prelims.

2. There are only 47 people appearing in the interview who were 21 or 22 in 2023 and appeared in the interview.

3. 201 people out of them were 30, 31 and 32 when they appeared in Prelims 2023.

4. 55 people out of these were above 32 and appeared for the interview.

5. The average of interview appearing candidates was 26.

Get some motivation from this data. There is always light and more light when you are in the sweet spot of 24-29.

Donald trump is on the way to become President of US again.

The recent Supreme Court ruling has reaffirmed and clarified key constitutional provisions regarding the right to property, particularly Articles 31C and 39(b), in a significant way.

Here are the main takeaways from the ruling:

1. Existence of Article 31C: The Court has confirmed that Article 31C, which protects laws that give effect to specific Directive Principles (Articles 39(b) and 39(c)), remains valid in a limited form.

- It is upheld in the post-Kesavananda Bharati sense, meaning laws aiming to secure the common good through resource distribution and preventing wealth concentration are shielded from challenges under Articles 14 (equality) and 19 (freedoms).

-  However, Article 31C does not protect laws related to other Directive Principles outside of Articles 39(b) and (c), which was earlier struck down in Minerva Mills (1980).

2. Interpretation of Article 39(b) - "Material Resources of the Community": The Court rejected a broad interpretation of “material resources of the community” that would allow the government to acquire and redistribute all privately owned resources.

- This overturns the interpretation from previous cases (influenced by Justice Krishna Iyer’s view) that allowed expansive redistribution of private wealth.

- Now, the Court has held that private properties don’t automatically become “material resources of the community,” and their redistribution must align more closely with the common good principle, focusing on resources with a community-centric purpose rather than general private property.
- ⁠3. Right to Property vs. Directive Principles: The judgment highlights a balanced view of the right to property vis-à-vis Directive Principles.

-  While Article 39(b) encourages redistributive justice, the ruling suggests that such redistribution should not infringe on the basic individual right to property under Article 300A (Right to Property), which, though no longer a fundamental right, is constitutionally protected.

-  The state’s obligation under Article 39(b) does not override individual property rights indiscriminately.

4. Dissent and Separate Opinions: Justice DY Chandrachud led the majority opinion, supported by most of the Bench, with Justice BV Nagarathna offering a concurring opinion.

-  Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, however, dissented, indicating differences in the interpretation of the scope and limitations of Articles 31C and 39(b).

-  The details of the dissent provide insight into alternative views on property rights and redistributive justice.

This judgment thus limits the government’s power to redistribute private property and maintains a narrower view of what constitutes “material resources of the community.”

-  The decision will likely influence future legislation and interpretations around property rights and state intervention in economic matters.

Government cannot acquire and redistribute all privately owned properties- Supreme Court.
