🔔What is the news ?
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has initiated a Ph.D. excellence citation to recognize outstanding research work by scholars in Indian universities, aiming to promote original research and academic excellence across disciplines.

• UGC analyzed Ph.D. admissions between 2011 and 2018.

• Ph.D. admissions grew by 10% annually during the period.

📌 The number of Ph.D. admissions doubled from 77,798 in 2010-11 to 1,61,412 in 2017-18.

📌 Discipline-wise distribution:

1. Science: 30% of Ph.D. degrees awarded.

2. Engineering and Technology: 26%

3. Social Sciences: 12%

🎯 The University Grants Commission is a statutory organization under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.

🎯 UGC was established by an Act of Parliament in 1956 for the promotion and coordination of university education and for the determination and maintenance of standards of teaching, examination, and research in universities, and for the purpose of performing its functions under this Act.

🎯 In addition to providing grants to eligible universities and colleges, the Commission also advises the Central and State Governments on the measures which are necessary for the development of Higher Education.
