India's Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Minister Inder Singh Parmar has claimed that Indians 'discovered' America centuries before Italian navigator Christopher Columbus. "Indians went there and built temples in San Diego. Institutions are teaching students 'false history,'" he said.
He made these comments while speaking against Western education at the convocation ceremony of Barkatullah University in Bhopal on Tuesday.
Without naming any specific library or museum, Inder Singh Parma says, "In the 8th century, Indians went to San Diego, California, and built temples there. Evidence of this is in an American museum and library."
He also claims that Indians have turned America into a capitalist economy, "Indians helped the Maya civilization in the development of America." The Maya civilization expanded into various regions of Mexico and Central America around 2000 BC. Note that the city of San Diego, California (where there are some temples, but all were founded in the late 20th or 21st century) was founded in the late 18th century.
Earlier, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in his maiden speech in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly had claimed that India's Ujjain was once regarded as the global standard of time. His administration will bring back this status from the Greenwich Man Temple. Parmar made such a comment a few months after his statement.
Note that the story that Columbus discovered America is largely fictional.
Columbus made unsuccessful attempts to find a sea route from Europe to Asia in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. During this time he traveled from Spain to the Caribbean several times. However, he could not reach North America on his journey.
Moreover, the Caribbean regions he traveled to were already inhabited by indigenous peoples.
However, there is no evidence that Indians arrived in America before explorers and colonists from other countries.
Columbus died in 1507, still convinced that he had traveled to Asia. However, another Italian explorer, Amerigo Vespucci, after traveling to Brazil in 1501-1502, insisted that it was not part of Asia. Rather, it is an entirely new continent, previously unknown to Europeans. After his theory was confirmed, European historians named the continent 'America' using Vespucci's first name.
Parmar questioned the need for Columbus's education in India. He said, "Education should have taught that those who went to America after Columbus killed the natives and took their land. But it was not taught."
Parmar essentially wanted to argue about the dangers of 'Western education'. "The Central government's National Education Policy 2020 is trying to change such attitudes and focus on Indian culture and heritage," he said.
He said, "Invaders attacked the country's education to rule India forever and wanted to destroy it. We are fortunate that in 2020 educationists have come up with the National Education Policy and resolved to be 'world gurus' to build a modern and developed India."
