💡How to determine the right lot size without calculations?

It is possible find the appropriate lot size without resorting to calculations. Many brokers offer user-friendly mobile apps that display your risk amount once you input a stop-loss. By adjusting the lot size until the risk amount aligns with your preferred level, you can easily determine the correct lot size without calculations.

Calculating lot size is relatively straightforward when it comes to trading assets like commodities, stocks, and indices.

However, it becomes more difficult with currency pairs due to decimal calculations and the need to convert base currency to your account currency, among other factors. That's why we suggest utilizing a lot size calculator, conveniently accessible on our website:

At the start, using a calculator might appear difficult and time-consuming. However, with some practice, it will take you less than a minute to determine the right lot size for your trade.

💡Why should you always calculate lot size before trading?

The reasons are quite clear. Each trade has its own individual stop-loss, and we're already aware that the placement of the stop-loss is a significant factor that impacts the size of a position. As a result, the lot size will be different for each trade.

Wider stop-loss = smaller positions
Tighter stop-loss = bigger positions

If your stop-loss (SL) is set at $88 instead of $89, your risk per barrel would double to $2 from $1. In this case, you'd only be able to purchase 25 barrels (0.25 lots) without breaking your risk management rules. If you trade 50 barrels (0.5 lots) with the same stop-loss, you'd end up losing twice the amount you intended.

On the other hand, placing your SL at $89.50 would mean risking only $0.50 per barrel, enabling you to buy 100 barrels (1 full lot) instead of 50 (0.5 lots). It's important to note that choosing a trade size that doesn't match the risk management requirements can significantly reduce potential profit.

Furthermore, if your calculation of the lot size is not precise, your risk management might become irregular, resulting in inconsistent and unpredictable trading results in the long-run.
