As you are aware, in a letter dated 20th August 2024, the Union gave Government a 21-day ultimatum for the resolution of all the issues in contention since 2009.

“We categorically want to inform you that nothing tangible has changed safe for meetings and more meetings for which government agents were more concerned with receiving allowances for convening such meetings from tax-payers money and the funds that our Government claims it does not have.

The Union calls on those in authority as well as their agents to seize this window so as to forestall the looming crisis.

“With a feeling of indignation, we regret to bore you with the cry of anger, frustration, and unfulfilled promises that have tirelessly bedeviled our struggle and have been front-burnt for several years - ASUU

Our Union will withdraw services and should not be held responsible for the breakdown in industrial harmony which will arise as a result of the government’s insensitivity, insincerity, indifference, and time-buying tactics - ASUU

ASUU’s key demands are:

Payment of withheld salaries for staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct appointments affected by the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

The release of third-party deductions, including check-off dues and cooperative contributions.

Funding for the revitalization of public universities, as partly captured in the 2023 Federal Government Budget.

The payment of Earned Academic Allowances.

Addressing the proliferation of universities by federal and state governments.

Implementing the recommendations of visitation panels to universities.

Reversing the illegal dissolution of Governing Councils.

Adopting the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as a replacement for the controversial IPPIS system.

ICYMI - The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Imo State University chapter, on friday(Last week) embarked on an indefinite strike to press home their demands which remains unresolved till date.

The union issues a 14-Day strike ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved issues - ASUU.

Resolution from today’s emergency meeting of the NLC following Joe Ajaero's arrest:

- The NLC demands the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Joe Ajaero before 12 midnight today.

- The NLC also demands the immediate reversal of the current hike in the price of petrol to N617/Litre.

- The NLC  places all its affiliates, State Councils, Civil society allies, and the Nigerian populace on red alert.

- The NLC summons an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) by 9:00 AM tomorrow, the 10th day of September, 2024

On whether ASUU would press ahead with strike if no agreement was reached by September 6;

“As a union, our leadership doesn’t decide for our members. Whatever we get by September 6th will be communicated to our members and they will decide on what to do next -ASUU.

Update - ASUU and Federal Government to resume talks September 6th.

Currently, the funds(allocated to TETFund) are not being used effectively. Many campus projects from as far back as 2014 and 2015 remain incomplete.

I appeal to the Minister and board members to assess how the funds have been used.”

“I also want to emphasise that the only thing still keeping us afloat as a university system is TETFund, which is a product of our struggle.

“So, my advice is to use this money wisely for the benefit of future generations. Properly managed, TETFund resources can address many problems - ASUU President.

ASUU President on inauguration of the TETFund Board of Trustees (BOT) and the Governing Councils;

 “My prayer is that this council will contribute to transforming our educational system. When we were at the university, we had people from other countries in the same hostel and classrooms, with lecturers from around the world.
Today, the situation is so dire that 90% of the lecturers in a typical university are from the same state.

Update - The meeting between the federal government and ASUU earlier scheduled on monday has been postponed to a later date.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a twenty-one day strike notice to the Federal Government over unmet demands, including the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement and funding for the revitalization of public universities.
