Grammar work book, Unit 1,Ad 2🦋
Mahan 💙

The (beach) was crowded. (It) was a popular place on a hot summer day.

Incorrect: Each of the girls brought their book.
Correct: (Each of the girls) brought (her) book.

Incorrect: Neither Alex nor his friends lost his way.
Correct: Neither Alez nor (his friends) lost (their) way.
(The pronoun agrees with the nearest antecedent.)

Incorrect: I love to travel, especially when you go to foreign countries.
Correct: (I) love to travel, especially when (I) go to foreign countries.

Incorrect: When you are about to merge with moving traffic on the freeway, one should not stop his or her car.
Correct: When (you) are about to merge with moving traffic on the freeway, (you) should not stop (your) car.

(my husband) gave me (his) best advice.

@Ad2MitraMasumeh

(Everyone) worked on (his) final draft.

2. برای جلوگیری از تعصب جنسی درک شده، از (her or she) و (his or her) به جای (he or his) استفاده کنید.

(Everyone) worked on (his or her) final draft.

(All) the students worked on (their) final drafts.

Incorrect: Everyone worked on their final draft.
Correct: (Everyone) worked on (his or her) final draft.
Correct: (All) the students worked on (their) final drafts.

Kim hosts a book club meeting at her house, where the members discuss Toni Morrison's novel "Beloved." They talk about the plot and characters, including the mysterious character of Beloved. Kim shares her insights into Morrison's writing and her Nobel Prize acceptance speech, which emphasizes the complexity of literature and the impact of history on individual people. The discussion highlights the powerful themes and open-ended questions in Morrison's work.
The group discusses their thoughts on a book, with Kim wanting more description of America after slavery and the Civil War, while Sherrie and Pablo feel that the author's focus on the characters' lives rather than the world around them is intentional. They all agree that the book was powerful and thought-provoking. The conversation ends with a discussion about next month's book.

Summary mini_listening Unit 5

The given text presents two individuals, Lucia and Rick, describing their recurring dreams or nightmares. Lucia shares a dream where she finds herself back in high school, feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable as she navigates through the school's hallways, unable to locate her class schedule and worried about missing classes and important tests. She reflects that this dream typically occurs when she feels worried or overwhelmed in her waking life.

On the other hand, Rick details his nightmare in which he experiences a sense of danger and immobilization. He feels like he is in his real-life environment, but he cannot move or scream, and perceives something approaching him. Rick finds this experience incredibly disturbing, especially when it appears to mirror his physical state in bed. He mentions occasions when his ability to move or open his eyes is limited, adding to the unsettling nature of the dream.

Both individuals express feelings of helplessness and discomfort associated with their respective recurring dreams and nightmares. Lucia connects her dream to moments of distress in her waking life, while Rick describes feeling completely helpless during his nightmare, sometimes linked to real-life challenges such as sickness.

1) A man in Thailand who considered himself a snake charmer was strangled to death by a boa constrictor. The man had rushed to see the giant snake after hearing it was spotted near a main road. He put the snake around his neck, but while walking home with friends, the snake strangled him to death.

2) Two teenage girls who went missing from a ship were found safe and sound near a small town on Australia's northeast coast. The girls explained that they had fallen asleep in their friend's cabin and woke up to find the ship heading for Singapore. They decided to jump off the ship and swim to shore, ending up on a deserted part of the Australian coast where they had to walk over 100 miles to reach the nearest town.

3) In California, two police officers pursuing a car thief in a high-speed chase were rescued by the very thief they were chasing. During the chase, their car overturned and fell into a shallow river, trapping them inside as it filled with water. The thief returned to the scene of the accident and helped rescue the officers. As a result, charges against him were dropped by the Hollywood Police Department for saving their lives.

The radio host introduces the concept of restorative justice as an alternative to traditional approaches to dealing with crime. Restorative justice focuses on restoring the victim and the community rather than punishing the offender. An example is given where young offenders meet face-to-face with the victims of their crimes and take responsibility for repairing the damage. The approach helps offenders realize the impact of their actions and reduces the likelihood of reoffending. Restorative justice programs exist in various countries, including New Zealand and the United States, and have roots in traditional systems used by indigenous peoples. The radio host invites listeners to call in for further discussion.
